I have had some problems for a couple of weeks. I successfully got rid of
Trojan Horse.PSW.Ldpinch.DQY , which was good. I deleted the offending file
using the Registry.
All went well until yesterday (and although I reported above about the
Trojan affair, I don't think Trojan has anything to do with the new problem.
Here it is.....
When I boot up and go to Start, the display shows OK and the 'Documents and
Settings, the My Music, the My pics, the My Music, the Favourites work fine
with the menus. BUT when I want to get to anything in the 'My Computer' like
Control Panel or Floppy or Local Disk etc., I get a "Sorry Microsoft has
detected a serious Error and we are closing Down" comes up. Therefore I
cannot get to my disks!!!
The floppy doesn't work. when I look for Windows Explorer, I get the same
error message.
So Windows Exlplorer is not reachable.
I want to re-install the OS from the CD but when I try there is a notice
that the existing OS is later than what is on the CD.
Anyone know if this is wise to re-install from the CD.
Also anyone know how to "find" my Explorer, which is not appearing.
Finally, my HD is a Samsung SP0411N built 01/07/2001 and has been passed on
from my former PC's. Is it time to change it or do they last longer than 6
years?
cheers

It might be this simple, but I fear it won't help: Click Start, Run,
type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged or missing,
they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so damaged files
will be replaced.

Thanks for your suggestion. Actually, I had already tried it without success.
(for those reading this , you should be aware that there is a space between
the SFC and the forward slash! ...sfc /scannow. Yes it also works in lower
case).

However, I have got the solution to the problem from another subscriber and
I didn't have to re-install the OS!.........
The problem was caused by one of the add-ons to Internet Explorer 7.
What you have to do is go into 'tools' and then 'manage addons' and disable
them one by one until you have found the culprit!
In my case, I disabled them ALL and it solved the problem straight away!
But now I get some apps which require the add-on. Easy. I just 'enable' it
through the same 'tools' slot.
