Windows explorer crashes (no error message displayed)

Very frustrating error on a friends machine.

Windows explorer crashes and quietly restarts, taskbar and icons dissappear
and reappear as you would expect when explorer restarts following an
illegal operation only there is no error message displayed.

This occurs whenever an explorer window is created for instance by dbl
clicking 'my computer' or attempting to open the 'control panel' I have not
managed to open an explorer window by any means. It also occurs when
attempting to open 'Internet Explorer'.

The fault is not present when the computer is started in safe mode. The
fault persisted even when all startup items were dissabled from within
msconfig and persisted after reinstalling windows.

I removed several virus and trojan horse programs which may have caused
this fault but don't have to foggiest idea why explorer is restarting or
how to stop it.

Ideas please???

If there were viruses and trojan horses on the machine, there is no
guarentee that the executable itself has not been modified to do this in
order to load up some of its binaries. A re-install is the safest way to
recover from a major virus/intrusion problem.
