Everytime I open a folder which contains video files in .avi format, the
explorer my system pauses then I get the "An error has occured in Windows
Explorer and Windows Explorer has to close." (or something to that effect).

I have no idea what's causing this problem.

Check your add remove programs for any 3rd party codecs installed on the
system, uninstall them or update them. Alternatively, you can also run
autoruns.exe available from www.sysinternals.com. from the options menu hide
all microsoft services and uncheck to disable xvid.dll under explorer or
internet explorer. reboot the system and check if the issue still reoccurs.

I do not find any 3rd party codecs installed. I also ran autoruns.exe and
didnt find any string of xvid.ll in explorer or internet explorer.

If you're happy with simple registry editing you can try this, which has
worked for many:

Run regedit and navigate your way to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

Back up the key for safety, then delete the "Default" value on the right,
close regedit and try opening the folder again.

Failing that, in a command prompt (Start > Run > type "cmd" and press Enter)
type:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

and press Enter. Then type

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

and Enter, close the command prompt window and try the folder once more.
