Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) crashing alarmingly frequently

Hi,
I'm running Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 2.
Windows explorer has been crashing on and off for some time, but now it's
crashing with alarming regularity.
Sometimes it's after some activity, but often it's as soon as it is launched.
I get the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close" error message, which then sends en error report to Microsoft.
Once I've confirmed this everything appears to refresh – desktop icons and
even the Windows taskbar.
The following appears in the Event Viewer:
"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x000139f8."
And also:
"Fault bucket 128660815"
I've seen similar posings on the Microsoft support site when the faulting
module is some .dll file or other, but never explorer.exe itself.
I have up-to-date virus software and have just done a spyware scan, which
found nothing of any significance.
Anyone have any ideas on what's causing this and how I can reslove it?
Thanks a lot.

I'm having this same problem and no one can help me. I too am using up to
date virus protection software and have verified I have no spyware.

On Monday, it took me 27 attempts to succesfully boot my computer. The
first 26 times, I received the error you referenced below. This problem
started about a month ago, but it's getting worse. A month ago I could
reboot and everything was fine. That's not the case any longer. I hope
someone out there can help us out.

It could be hardware. Go through these general hardware troubleshooting
steps:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

Standard caveat: Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have all your data backed up before you take
the machine into a shop.

I received no replies to this posting.
So, in desperation I had yet another attempt to find info online.
The only useful information I eventually managed to find was for a similar
problem on a different support forum.
The advice was to run a system file check on my PC.
This scans and verifies the versions of all protected system files.
If it discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the
correct version of the file and replaces the incorrect file.
So I gave it a go.

Select Start > Run.
Type the following:
sfc /scannow

This takes a while, but (fingers crossed) I haven't experienced the problem
since. Only been around 24 hours so far, but usually I'd have experienced
dozens of crashes by now.
Hope this resolves it for you.

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be listed in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK | Click System |

Windows File Protection will be listed under the Source column. Look at any
Windows File Protection entries.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

The Event Viewer just lists that the Windows File Protection scan started
and then completed successfully. It doesn't provide any further details.
But, as the error hasn't recurred, I'm hoping it has sorted the problem.
