Windows Explorer consistently crashing! In DIRE need of help!

I'm running Windows XP Professional, service pack 2, and have lately had
Windows Explorer crash almost every time I've attempted to open it by
clicking My Computer or double clicking on a desktop folder or autoplaying a
CD (read: any time Windows Explorer is called to action). Windows Explorer is
stable once a window is open (meaning I can navigate just fine), but calling
it open when no explorer window is present almost always prompts an
"Unexpected Error...sorry for the inconvenience, etc." I keep sending the
error report in hopes that Microsoft has a solution for this, or knows what
is causing the prroblem...but I've got nothin.

So how have I been dealing with this, then? Click OK to the error (or report
it or whatever), let Windows finish getting itself out of the Error "slump"
it kind of goes into, and then perform the same action that I originally did.
Almost always, Windows Explorer opens with no problems and is stable until
it's closed... So weird...Windows seems to no be able to open/generate/draw
an explorer window until it has encountered this error prior.

Another interesting thing is that Windows can not generate two instances of
Windows Explorer anymore, meaning if I attempt to open a second explorer
window when one is open, it comes crashing to a hault!

Also, coincidentally, this error always causes Yahoo's Konfabulator program
to Unknown Error out as well... I don't think the initial problem is directly
related to the program though (read: conflict problem) because I think I can
remember using Konfabulator in the past without this level of Explorer
annoyance, and I haven't seen/heard of any other Konfabulator uses
encountering this problem.

Oh, and I run spyware (Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta and Spyware Doctor
sometimes) and virus scans (brand new Norton 2006 Antivirus + subscription)
about once a week. My system is clean (save one Adware.gain instance that
pops up but Norton can't remove, but Norton's Adware.gain removal tool
detects nothing on my machine...?!?!), I believe...so I don't think that's
the problem.

Sound like a conflict or something?
I dunno, any input...it's becoming a major PITA, and I'd love to get this
resolved...

Thanks in advance for any input!

Thanks for the suggesiton, though I don't think this fix will help me solve
my problem... My problem is with Windows Explorer (the navigational window to
explore files), not Internet Explorer - I'm a firefox user. ;)

Any other ideas... I'm trying to avoid just reinstalling Windows all
together. :(
