Windows Explorer Crash

Why would Windows Explorer crash when I open some folders but not others?

I have some folders that have scanned pictures (negatives or slides
usually). When I open them, I often (lately, consistently) get the "Windows
Explorer has a problem and has to close..." error message. This doesn't
seem to happen when I look at music album folders or digital camera picture
folders. Is there some way to fix this? Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for your time and attention.

Any information on the cause of the crash in Event Viewer? (Start > Run >
eventvwr.msc > OK).

What should I be looking for? In Application, I have Source = "Application
Error" Category = None Event = 1001 User - N/A.

Okay, I still don't see anything that tells me what to do to stop the
problem. It seems to be folders with files scanned with our Epson 4870
scanner for maximum or near maximum resolution and the working folder in
particular.
