Whenever I open up my control panel or a web page, I get an error message
saying "Internet Explorer or Window Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." When I click the close
button the browser or control panel shut down. what has happened?

Run these cleaners, then post back.

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update each program, once installed, before running.

Note2: To avoid the False-Flag for the DSO Exploit (W3), open
Spybot/Advanced Mode/Settings/Ignore Products. On the All Products Tab,
scrol to DSO Exploit and check that item only. Randy (silj)

SP2 installed or not?

How about Start->Search
How about opening the Recycle bin
How about opening up a shortcut to a folder on your desktop
How about opening up Windows Explorer directly

Do they all more or less have same problem?
Or is it limited to just Control Panel and web pages?

That will help determine how broad the problem is.

thanks

Don,
Sorry this took so long to respond. Yes, SP 2 installed and it only happens
with explorer and IE. Just prior to this, I updated Earthlink's total access
and ran spybot. After this the error message appeared.

Total Access is known to be buggy. Disable it and see if that fixes the
issue.

TotalAccess uses files to store your logon info as a
protected cookie. It also tracks the use of the software for
quality. When you run spybot you will need to double-check
the list it presents for any Total Access and Earthlink
items and deselect them, them cinfirm the ignore on those.
