windows documents and settings corruption;CHKDSK made worse

I got a message that there was corruption here, and a
message that I should run chkdsk. Doing so produced
disatrous reults. Files were deleted, and now there are
no icons on the taskbar at the bottom. Classic view
can't be chosen for system. Recycle bin won't open.
Printer drivers are gone. Iomega Hot burn no longer
works. Nikon batch file renaming doesn't work. 3 Access
databases now give a Visual Basic error message when
opened, and showed dates of being last modified in March
though some were only the day before.

I had not seen chkdsk since Win 3.1. At that time, there
was an option to rename files instead of just deleting
them, and doing saved me from having my biggest and most
important database from being wiped out. After finding
the suffix renamed to .chk or something, I renamed it
back to .mdb and there was nothing wrong with it.

This chkdsk just deleted and ruined things with no option
to rename. I was also posting an account of this to the
Access forum, when the keyboard stopped functioning and I
had to reboot. Are these signs of a virus or what is
going on?

Get a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site
and check the drive. I know that won't help with the current situation
but at least you can see if there is a hardware problem with the drive.
