When I try to run WD beta 2, I get an error message which says "Applicatioin
failed to initialize: 0x800106ba.A problem caused win defender service to
stop.To start the service, restart the computer or search help & support on
how to start a service manually." Anybody can help me find out the problem?

My system runs win 2000 server Sp4

you can start the Window Defender service by typing "net start windefend":
at a command prompt. That may just elicit the same message though.

Thanks for the suggestion.Regretably it is not the answer. It looked initially as if it was going to start but then the original message reappeared. Regards

Is the machine fully up to date on critical patches, via WindowsUpdate?

Especially--is the Windows Installer 3.1 installed? (this one shows in the
list in add or remove programs)

The Windows Defender service has a dependency on RPC--have you disabled any
services on this machine? Remote Procedure Call should be set to automatic,
and started, I believe.

All patches etc are upto date.I do have to install them manualy.I can
download them without any problem but they will not lnstall. Windows
Installer 3.1 is installed.
Please could you explain about RPC.I havn't come across it yet?
