Windows Defender will not update definitions

I had almost the same error 0x80240025. The problem was that on our network
we turn off automatic updates with our group policy and that is how Windows
Defender gets it's updates.

I am also behind ISA Server 2000 and it's failing with a 0x8024002b

Windows Update works fine.

Thanks--I think I'm gonna get out excel and start building a table to see if
it helps make sense out of these numbers.

There are updates dated the 12th, I believe. Checking proxy settings is in
order--but I'm still clueless on this and likely to remain so for some hours
or days--I've barely time to look at the messages here, I'm afraid.

I get the same code 80072efd but also 80072ee2. This is only on one XP SP2
machine. Other XPs & W2003svr are OK, the W2000s are hosed by the GDI+
prereq.

Already did the uninstall/reboot/reinstall dance. Still no joy.

Hi,

I also have the same issue. Windows Defender can't update with an error
ox8024402c. I did try it behind an ISA 2004 server and through a standard
Internet link and I get the same error. Could it be due to policy? At home,
where I don't have a policy, it did work correctly. Maybe this can help

A post from a Microsoft staffer says that errors beginning with 0x8024 are
always related to underlying functionality necesary for Windows Update.

So--does WindowsUpdate or Microsoft Update or Autoupdate function on this
network (the one which may have policy settings in place?) Is there a SUS
or WSUS server involved? If WSUS, has the administrator enabled the new
class of updates for Windows defender signature updates?

Thanks very much. I have followed the thread, researched online, did the due
diligence, etc. I have made and implemented a successful fix, however.

Sigh, this is a PITA. I had high hopes. I deleted this piece of junk from my
system.

I had the same error message and I found out my problem was that the
"automatic updates service" was disabled. So I started the service and set
it to the manual setting.

Thanks Bill,

We updated our WSUS environnement and everything works now. This was really
appreciated.

Quite likely. If your network is using WSUS to distribute patches, the
administrator can choose to enable distribution of the new class of Windows
Defender updates. If you are using SUS, or a third party product, I don't
believe that Windows Defender definitions can be made available via those
mechanisms.
