Unable to update Windows Defender, Error code 0x8024402c

I am getting a message that says Windows Defender was unable to complete the
update: 0x8024402c.

I checked the Microsoft FAQ and i did all that it told me to try and none of
that helped. Anyone have any suggestions

For some unknown reason i didnt even consider looking at
windowsupdate.microsoft.com for the defender updates,... but thatnks that
worked.

I was getting this message also. I have a laptop that is from work, with
installed software from server. I have administrator privileges. I was
unable to update from home, but could update from Microsoft update. I
connected through VPN to the work network and then the error message
disappeared when updating from defender. Hope this helps, I am not an IT
person, but can provide more details if wished.

Your laptop is set so that autoupdate attempts to connect to an internal
corporate server for updates.

This explains why the error message goes away when you connect via vpn. If
that corporate server is a WSUS server, and if the administrator has enabled
Windows Defender definitions to be distributed, you should get updates
automatically when connected to the work network. Otherwise, using Microsoft
Update will be necessary.
