Windows Defender 0x8024402c error and autoudate dead

When I try to update Windows Defender on my IBM laptop, XP Pro OS, I get a
0x8024402c message saying could not update.

Maybe related is the Autoupdate tool is dead. Both boxes are grayed out
with no way to change them.

Ideas?

Hello Tom,

Does AutoUpdate work on your system?

Try going to Windows Update and applying all offered critical updates.

Also, be sure you have the lates Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is
availªble

Try this, download:
http://djlizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix-full.exe
and do a scan with all the check marks on.
