I keep getting the following message everytime I want to update. Any idea
how to fix this problem.

"Defender was unable to complete teh update :0x8024402c"

I have a firewalled US robotics wireless access point. I added windows
defender to teh list of allowed accesss, but that didn't see to have solved
the problem.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Check that MsMpEng.exe within C:\Program Files \Windows Defender
has permission to run (firewall rule).

Does AutoUpdate work on your system?

Try going to Windows Update and applying all offered critical updates.

Thanks -- it seems that when I did the windows update, a "definition" of
defender was updated, and I suspect that that has solved the problem, since
the update option is no longer available to me from the main window area of
"Windows defender"

Let's just double-check, though, by going to Help, About, and hitting the
Check for updates button.

Windows Update should always work unless your access to Windows Update is
restricted by policy settings. However--it'd be good to check the
AutoUpdate option--which is what happens within the program.

If that "check for updates" completes without error, you are fine. This
process happens via autoupdate, so there's no progress bar, and it is
somewhat asynchronus--you should see two balloon messages, one at the start
of the check, and one when it completes. There's no need to keep Defender
open while this is happening, you can close it up and just watch for the
second balloon. If you have balloon messages turned off, you won't see
anything at all, except for a change in the version within the UI of the
program--probably after closing and reopening it.

I found that you can get this error message when you have your windows update
site re-directed to a local intranet WSUS server via Group Policy. I'm not
the WSUS admin so I don't know if the updates for Windows defender have been
downloaded and approved.
