Windows defender gets an update error after installation

When I select "Check Now", it says

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update:
0x800b0100. No signature was present in the subject.

Reinstalling does not help.

Can you go to Windows Update, do an express scan and accept all offered
updates, and see whether this changes the behavior?

Does AutoUpdate function on this machine? Is this machine a home, or a
corporate PC?

There are no updates on the Windows update site for me. Windows Update works
fine for me though.

This is a home machine running Professional XP. I'm registered Genuine
Advantage and all that good stuff. Everything else works fine except Defender.

If no updates are offered at Windows Update, does this mean that the install
is current on definitions now? 1.14.1410.10 at the bottom of the home page?

Can you check the details in this web reference:

http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/2004-09/6629.html

This is pretty old, but I trust the source.

That didn't help. There were a couple of files named edb.chk and edb.log in
that directory. They were in use so I booted into Safe Mode and removed them
in D:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2. They seemed to be recreated when I rebooted.

The version at the bottom of the Windows Defender screen is 1.0.0.0 created
on 1/25/2006 at 12:29 PM.

Thanks for your help.

I have exactly the same problem.
I'm currently running XP Sp2 spanish version and Nod32 as my AV.

Hi Juancito,

check in Help, about--the top number--to see whether you are on 1051
or 1347. And also your Def. number.
Should be now:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1372.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1436.4
With OS you are running?
Did you try a install with the realtime scanner of your AV off?

Let me know.

Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
