I just installed Windows Defender Beta 2 on my XP system and I get the
following error when I try to update the signatures
"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80244008"
I have all the latest patches for XP and office installed. Any help getting
this working would be greatly appreciated

I am having the same issue. This error message is on my system every
morning, and everytime I try to update. Windows 2k Server SP4, anyone have
any ideas out there?

Can everyone in this thread please try going to Windows Update and applying
all offered Windows Defender definition updates?

Bill - I have tried windows update and there hasn't been any updates listed,
and my entire system is up to date. 0 updates available.

PA Bear - I have tried your suggestion, and I actually thought it would
work, but it didn't.

After uninstalling the definitions per MS website, then running "Check for
Updates" - "Windows defender found no new definitions or engine updates
available."

I tried to run a scan before and after uninstalling, they both offered the
same error.

"Elasped Time 00:02:56
Objects scanned: 12069
Object: C:\WINNT\System32\wowexec.exe

Windows Defender encountered an error 0x8050800c. An unexpected problem
occured. Install any available updates, and then try to start the program
again."

Anything else you all could suggest?

If you go to Help, About, in Windows Defender, look in the grey box and see
the current versions--here are what I see on my own system, which is up to
date as of this writing:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1186.0

Signature Version: 1.14.1325.6

What do you see? (it is possible to cut and paste this info, but I think
you must use command-line commands--ctrl C to copy.)

Well it's good to know I am up to date, strangely, even after uninstalling
the definitions:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1186.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1325.6
Now any ideas on how to get it to scan my system without erroring out?

and thanks for the extra help. :)

Those all look good.

The scan issue you are hitting, I believe, is probably a bug. If you are on
a dynamic disk partition, this is a known issue, which is on the way to
being fixed, but the code with the fix in it has not yet been released.

It will come via the normal update process, I believe. On such systems,
both updating and real-time protection are still fully functional, but scans
are not able to complete until this bug is fixed.

If, by chance, you are not on a dynamic partition, it is possible that a
chkdsk run may fix this issue--but it may not.

I will wait for the update. I havent had time recently to really research
this issue so its nice to log in to an email with an update from you. :)
Thanks again.

Great--I hope the update will be soon. It has been some weeks since
Microsoft announced that they had a fix, but there are lots of layers
between that statement and actual release to the update mechanism.
