1. They make the OS
2. They KNOW the OS
3. They could use that knowledge to create very effective malware and
release it into the wild
4. They would sell the cure.

AKA a "protection" racket.

Microsoft is *way* too clever for such stupid tricks. They know they'd
be found out; they also know that the regulatory price they would have
to pay once found out is simply not worth it: this would endanger their
current near-monopoly.

The guys in Redmond can and will continue to print money without having
to resort to this sort of criminal tactics.

Oh and they are researching on nuclear power to destroy the visible
side of the moon. :-S

Oh well...

Are you the Luis Cobian who makes Cobian Backup?

Yes, of course you're right. It's badthink to believe that Microsoft
would *ever* do something as dishonest as to try to dupe the public.

No more nor less dishonest that anybody else. MS are *****people******
like you and me.

No, but this software is upgradable only through "genuine Windows"
control: so, it's good as anti-piracy system.

The anti-piracy will be soon defeated; just wait...
(crackers did this for Windows' activation; for SP2; and for Windows
Update).

my 2000sp4 system says I need to install "2000 security prerequisite
pack" where do I get this ?

The error says that you need to have GDI+ installed on your computer. You
can get it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6A63AB9C-DF12-4D41
-933C-BE590FEAA05A&displaylang=en

Watch the above link for wrap.

Once you download gdiplus_dnld.exe, extract gdiplus.dll from the package,
and put it in system32. Alternatively, search your system for
gdiplus.dll, and move a copy into system32. The version that I have on my
computer that works is 5.1.3102.1360

Hope that helps

Of course, you have no way of knowing that. For instance, could you say
the same thing about organized crime?
MS are *****people****** like you and me.

Yes, they're human beings, but they're people heavily motivated by
greed. I am not and I can't speak for you.

Besides, previous behavior on the part of Microsoft:

http://sillydog.org/msbad.html
http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f3800/msjudgex.htm

is most likely a good indicator of how they will behave in the future.

I understand, just like Ford, Nike, Apple, Sun, Fedora, Toyota,
Nestlé, New York Times, ABC, Symantec, Nissan, GMC, Disney and every
other ****commercial***** entity out there.

Besides, previous behavior on the part of Microsoft:

Nothing ***that*** bad there. And LOTS of urban myths. And hey, Apple
and Sun are A LOT worse.

If all your friends were eating dog crap and it still tasted, smelled
and WAS dog crap, would you eat it too?
Nothing ***that*** bad there. And LOTS of urban myths.

Right. What's so wrong with just attempting to monopolize the entire
computer industry?
And hey, Apple and Sun are A LOT worse.

Whew! Go stick your head back in the ground. You know, that one where
you keep your head in the front lawn of the Microsoft "campus"*.

* definition of campus: A field on which the buildings of an institution
of learning are located.

Microsoft is not an "institution of learning".

EOD.

Ahh, the old 'two wrongs make a right' argument.

Interesting. I was simply stating a fact (Microsoft is NOT an institute
of learning, and the place in Redmond is simply a corporate
headquarters) and get killfiled for it.

It's common knowledge that Bill Gates dropped out of college in order to
found Microsoft. Maybe this "campus" business has something to do with that.

Well according to them, the only thing removed is cookie scanning which
was pretty useless anyway IMHO. They added some opt in peer to peer infor
sharing and the ability to run in all user accounts.

They also simplified the GUI, so you can no longer configure what
checkpoints are monitored.

"Real-Time Protection, which helps prevent unwanted software from being
installed, is enhanced to better monitor key points in the operating
system for changes. These features help you stay productive because they
help to prevent pop-ups and the performance degradation that is caused by
spyware and other potentially unwanted software."

My guess is they probably turned off some of the "checkpoints" to help
reduce prompts. To dumb it down for the masses.
