Defender is a step back (IMHO)

In my opinion, the new Defender Beta 2 is a step back:

It won't update through MS's own ISA Server Proxy
BHO explorer?
IE Toolbar explorer?
Tracks eraser?
Downloaded ActiveX?
IE Settings?
Host File?
Shell Execute Hooks?
Tracks Eraser?
Browser Restore?

These were essential tools, especially the IE stuff - Cant' tell you how
many times I've had to use those tools manually and now they are gone? Please
tell me I missed a "Use Advanced Interface" option somewhere and MS didn't
take the best AS product out there and turn it to crap!

I concur, these tools have been invaluable to me in the past year. Some of them were better than the other two trusted "third party" options out there, some not quite, but all useful.

Looks like I have to rely on Sysinternals Autoruns and Process Explorer tools, and Spybot, S & D Advanced Tools to browse these items. But they do not include some of the things I liked in MS AntiSpyWare Beta 1, such as the Browser Restore/Settings options and Shell hooks.

I can't believe that this is a Beta two, doesn't anyone listen to the users.
I need those tools back. And not to have a choice of an icon in taskbar is
crazy.

I completely agree as well! Bring back those features! I feel like my
computer is more exposed and vulnerable now that those are not there.

Recently I posted in this group to learn more about Windows Defender. I then
decided to try WD instead of MSAS. I had already decided to use Spyware
Guard and other pgms instead of MSAS because MSAS virtually shut down my
BellSouth DSL Internet connection, repeatedly hanging my Windows 2000
computer (that's hard to do!) and forcing reboots.

Installing WD was a mistake. Despite the fatuous hype on the MS sites and
blogs about the glories of WD, it proved useless. I removed it minutes after
installing it.

o It would barely install.
o It would not update.
o It lacked many of the cool controls of MSAS.

Where is MS going in the security business, anyway? Down the toilet?

IS ANYBODY AT MSFT READING THIS STUFF????

Old, and using other stuff instead of MSAS or WD.

I agree. Those features were priceless. I'm leaving Anti-Spyware on my PC at
home and not upgrading to Defender. And I'm not going to be uninstalling
Ad-Aware and SpyBot anytime soon. Now all three products are definetly
required, since Microsoft decided to remove all of the Advanced Tools. I'll
probably stick with Anti-Spyware in real-time and use Ad-Aware and Spybot for
occasional monthly scans.

I've had little trouble updating through ISA Server 2000 configured as a
transparent proxy.

In a few cases I have had to tweak the "automatically detect" proxy setting
in IE--on the same network, behing the same proxy, in one case I turned this
on, and in another off--to get the updates started.
