I just upgraded to it. This uninstalls old MS Antispyware. (It doesn't
tell you though)

I must say its a much better interface, the other one was too
cluttered.
Now supports 64-bit platforms.
I don't think it has a tray icon now.

Also taken away are:
Browser Hijacks
IE Toolbar exploits
Tracks Eraser
Downloaded ActiveX protection
Monitor IE Settings
Hosts File monitoring
Shell Execute Hooks
Browser restore
Cannot download any updates via proxy servers

Interesting

Hmm I wonder if I'm better off now? Scanning now

Why did they remove those useful features I wonder?

Anyone else got some comments

IMO, there is a clear conflict of interest with Microsoft getting into
the anti-malware business. And rest assured, it's only a matter of time
before any such program by them becomes payware.

No, but this software is upgradable only through "genuine Windows"
control: so, it's good as anti-piracy system.

Rather that fix bugs that allow malware to infect your system they will
tell you to download their (possible future shareware) product.

They *are* fixing bugs. Today I've got a new update. And if you don't like
it, don't download it. Nobody forces you.

Beware the new program from Microsoft will identify Symantec Antivirus
products as spyware and disable realtime protection. Our IT Security
identified this problem and reported it to MS and Symantec. Currently
there is no fix for it. If you use Symantec/Norton antivirus keep a
close eye on the real-time status.

Sounds like a good idea. Get rid of Symantec bloatware.

So, an inferior product to MS AntiSpyware. I run the old program today
and was not told to update (on the webpage it says it would
automatically to so).

The question remains: For how long will updated and new definitions be
available for MS AntiSpyware (the old program)...

Don't know if this still has any bearing, in light of the release by MS of
the replacement Defender, but my copy of MS Antispyware says: "This version
.... expires in 166 days;... expires on July 31, 2006." Juzme

How can you possibly say that? That would be like saying that an
abused woman shouldn't go back to the husband that beat her up.

The MS web site tells you that it will uninstall AntiSpyware beta 1. What it
doesn't tell you anywhere is that you have to install GDI+ if you don't have
it on your computer. I didn't have it on my win2k system, so Defender
wouldn't install until I installed it. Had to do some searching on the MS
site. Downloaded the GDI+ package, extracted the gdiplus.dll file, and moved
it into the system32 directory, because there were no instructions on where
it should go, other than into the programs directory that needed to use it,
but wouldn't install until GDI+ was installed. DOH

Never did when it was MS Antispyware and have no plans to now.

Not only has it always been in beta mode but MS Anti ignored Claria (Gator)
because they were thinking about buying the company.

http://netrn.net/spywareblog/archives/2005/07/08/ms-antispyware-ignores-more-adware/

Another reason why there is a conflict of interest.

If you wish to trust your systems security to a company well known for its
buggy OS's, programs and dodgy business practices then go ahead.

4. They would sell the cure.

AKA a "protection" racket.

Note that this is, of course, all speculation. Of course, Microsoft is
always totally honest with everybody and NEVER has any hidden agendas.

Your answer is unnecessarily defensive and aggressive. You asked a
question and John provided a possible scenario that is a relevant
answer. Chill out.

It's good to see you are finally admitting the truth...

That it can serve as an anti-piracy system is an excellent point. And it
still means that there is a conflict of interest.
