Windows Defender 0x8024002b

Everytime I try to update the definitions on my dell lab top that has Windows
XP, I get this message:

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002b"

What does this mean and how do I correct it so I can check for new
definitions.

Also, I have the latest Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) and I have
done the updates through Windows Update.

Check in c:\program files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe.manifest

If the file exist. please delete

AutoUpdate--the native automatic update mode of Windows Defender uses the
BITS service.

Do you have automatic updates turned on--for Windows?

I think the right strategy for a dialup user is just to ignore the update
process--let the bits service do its thing--dial in when you want, hang up
when you want.

Bits should use unused bandwidth when it can, resume, etc, until it gets
the file in.

If your windows update is pointing to your local WSUS, then you must include
the Windows Defender in synchronization setting.

In Products selection, please include Windows Defender
In Update classifications, please include Definition Updates

You must synchronize the server and approve the definition for clients to
get the latest definition.

I suspect this means that you are on a managed corporate network, where
access to Microsoft's Autoupdate servers is restricted.

It may also mean a proxy that AutoUpdate cannot work through. One way to
diagnose this is to do an update check within the program (click the arrow
to the right of the Help question mark, choose About Windows Defender, and
click on Check for Updates. Note the time.

Then do start, run, notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and hit enter.

the log may be very large. scroll to the end, then back up to the relevant
time, and cut and paste just that tail end of the file back here for
troubleshooting. One set of relevant lines will be those showing the server
to which AutoUpdate is connecting.
