I get the same thing on XP.
Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002b

I manually ran Windows Update from IE and was able to get the updated
definition file to download. However, trying to update through Windows
Defender still receives the same message.

Can both you and Rom try this:

In Windows Defender, go to Help, about, and do Check for Updates. Once this
has completed, with the error, do:

Start, run
notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log
(and hit enter)

In Notepad, scroll down to the very end of this (quite large) file, and cut
and paste just the section related to that attempt to update, back to a
reply in this thread.

Let's see whether we can see the cause of this error.

I was having the same issue with XP... however it now says it is updated in
the bubble but the program still says it is 14 days overdue. BTW... it is
set to do a check for updates and a full system scan every day at noon...
doesnt seem to be doing that.

I got into my windows update log as you suggested but for today alone it is
over 200 lines long... still want me to post it here?

OK - I see that the server that AutoUpdate is hitting is one at McGill
University, and that it is a SUS 1.0 server. SUS's end-of-life is December
of 2006, so Microsoft has made the decision to support only WSUS for
distribution of Windows Defender signatures.

So--if this machine is really bound by policy settings to update via
McGill's SUS server, you aren't going to get updates within the program--but
only through manual means--hitting Windows Update, or grabbing the filename
from a windowsupdate.log file and getting the file directly.

How identical? In what I've looked at so far, the crucial area is these
lines:
http://cus.campus.mcgill.ca/ClientWebService/client.asmx
2006-05-11 11:07:56 1244 88c Misc WARNING: WinHttp:
SendRequestToServerForFileInformation failed with 0x80190194

failed with 0x80190194
2006-05-11 11:07:56 1244 88c PT SUS 1.0 server is detected

These indicate that AutoUpdate is redirected by policy settings to an
internal server at McGill University, and that server is a SUS server,
rather than the newer WSUS.

Windows
Defender still receives the same message.

Take a look at my responses to the other messages in the thread--it may work
if you just post the beginning of the file--down to where the server that
AutoUpdate is connecting to is identified.

Ok,so that's is Bill,
thx,
What I understand that is not possible to get automatic updates, only manual
OK - I see that the server that AutoUpdate is hitting is one at McGill
University, and that it is a SUS 1.0 server. SUS's end-of-life is December
of 2006, so Microsoft has made the decision to support only WSUS for
distribution of Windows Defender signatures.

So--if this machine is really bound by policy settings to update via
McGill's SUS server, you aren't going to get updates within the program--but
only through manual means--hitting Windows Update, or grabbing the filename
from a windowsupdate.log file and getting the file directly.

Can both you and Rom try this:

In Windows Defender, go to Help, about, and do Check for Updates. Once
this
has completed, with the error, do:

Start, run
notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log
(and hit enter)

In Notepad, scroll down to the very end of this (quite large) file, and
cut
and paste just the section related to that attempt to update, back to a
reply in this thread.

Let's see whether we can see the cause of this error.

I manually ran Windows Update from IE and was able to get the updated
definition file to download. However, trying to update through Windows
Defender still receives the same message.

:

I get the same thing on XP.
Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002b

:

On windows 2000 ,I can not update WD definition files, can anyone
help
me
,please,I receive the error 0x8024002b.
I red a lot and try to fix, but no result.

Thanks for the information, I found the same problem here, our systems are
redirected to an SUS server for automatic updates, but manual updates via IE
work fine.

However, trying to update through
Windows
Defender still receives the same message.

I get the same thing on XP.
Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002b

That's it, for now. I think it quite likely that McGill will have something
to replace SUS in the wings--and if it is WSUS, and if you can convince them
that carrying Windows Defender definitions would be a Good Thing, you may be
better off in the long run.
--

I'm glad the mystery is out of the issue, anyway. It may be worth inquiring
whether WSUS is in the wings, and asking whether Windows Defender
definitions can be approved for distribution.

Thanks for the information, I found the same problem here, our systems are
redirected to an SUS server for automatic updates, but manual updates via
IE
work fine.

Rom said:
Ok,so that's is Bill,
thx,
What I understand that is not possible to get automatic updates, only
manual
OK - I see that the server that AutoUpdate is hitting is one at McGill
University, and that it is a SUS 1.0 server. SUS's end-of-life is
December
of 2006, so Microsoft has made the decision to support only WSUS for
distribution of Windows Defender signatures.

So--if this machine is really bound by policy settings to update via
McGill's SUS server, you aren't going to get updates within the
program--but
only through manual means--hitting Windows Update, or grabbing the
filename
from a windowsupdate.log file and getting the file directly.

Indeed--There's nothing there that tells me what institution is involved,
but this is clearly a SUS 1.0 server on a private network. As I mentioned,
SUS has an end-of-life (meaning that patches will no longer be distributed
to SUS servers, I believe) of December 31,2006. So anyone running SUS still
should be readying a replacement mechanism. Asking about WSUS, and whether
Windows Defender definitions can be carried, may be worthwhile (or not,
depending on the "culture!")

I'm expecting to see an occasional machine in these groups which had been a
corporate machine, but has been cut loose--sold to an employee, or otherwise
appropriately off the corporate network--I believe we've had one example of
that so far. This issue is the reason that one of the questions I ask
around update issues is whether the machine is a home machine or one on a
managed corporate network.

Can both you and Rom try this:

In Windows Defender, go to Help, about, and do Check for Updates.
Once
this
has completed, with the error, do:

Start, run
notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log
(and hit enter)

In Notepad, scroll down to the very end of this (quite large) file,
and
cut
and paste just the section related to that attempt to update, back
to a
reply in this thread.

Let's see whether we can see the cause of this error.

--

I manually ran Windows Update from IE and was able to get the
updated
definition file to download. However, trying to update through
Windows
Defender still receives the same message.

:

I get the same thing on XP.
Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002b

:

On windows 2000 ,I can not update WD definition files, can
anyone
help
me
,please,I receive the error 0x8024002b.
I red a lot and try to fix, but no result.
Many thx,

B

This one is opaque to me--There may be a tip-off there, but I don't have
enough experience with these logs to say. Offhand, I wonder whether the
issue is that some prerequisite is missing--i.e. have you gone to
WindowsUpdate, and applied all offered updates on an express scan (you can
leave off the WGA notification patch)?
