You are correct about what is happening. Windows Defender uses AutoUpdate
for updates within the program. On your machine, AutoUpdate is routed to a
local SUS server. Windows Defender definitions are not available to be
distributed via SUS.

They are available to be distributed via WSUS, if the administrator enables
that. Microsoft will not be distributing updates to SUS installations after
December 31 of this year, so I hope that your company has a migration plan
in place. If they move to WSUS, you could ask that Windows Defender
definitions be included in the items authorized to be distributed.

After reading lots of posts and your answers, Bill, to the 0x8024002b
definition update error, my problem is that the server updates uses at is
the ecupdate server at college server and it's a SUS type server
(2006-07-07 10:10:54 1132 57c PT SUS 1.0 server is detected)
I downloaded the def update with a manual Windows Update.
How can I tell if the manual update worked?
Defender says my Definition version is 1.14.1518.10 created on 7/5/2006 at
3:38 pm, which is when I installed Defender, not today when I downloaded the
definition.

That worked. The date and time you've posted are data taken from the
installed definition update, not the time you took any particular
actions--so it is coincidence if that was your install time.

You are correct about what is happening. Windows Defender uses
AutoUpdate
for updates within the program. On your machine, AutoUpdate is routed to
a
local SUS server. Windows Defender definitions are not available to be
distributed via SUS.

They are available to be distributed via WSUS, if the administrator
enables
that. Microsoft will not be distributing updates to SUS installations
after
December 31 of this year, so I hope that your company has a migration
plan
in place. If they move to WSUS, you could ask that Windows Defender
definitions be included in the items authorized to be distributed.
