Windows Boot Up Problems

Following the advice of Carey Frisch I have been trying to get rid of an
annoying request on windows start up having to click on Owner before the boot
up is complete. As I am the only user I do not need to have a user change or
password driven boot up. This need to click on Owner suddenly appeared for
no reason.

I went into Run and then
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type: control userpasswords2 , and then click OK.
3. In the dialog box that appears, clear the "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer" check box, and then click OK.

I unchecked the Users must use must enter a user name and password to use
this computer as requested, thinking that this would stop the need for
clicking on the Owner every time I log on but disaster, this stopped me from
getting onto the computer at all after I rebooted. It gave me the
Administrator to click on instead of Owner and then asked for a password. I
had no password nor ever giving one so I was locked out. After a very
frightening hour I had a thought and used Safe Mode and system restore to
put me back to where I was an hour before. I still have to click on the Owner
every time I boot up but this seems a result after the fright I had of being
locked out. I would like to get rid of this Owner thing but I am a little
sceptical, if I get into the position of being locked out again with the
Administrator asking for a password again how would I deal with that. How can
I get back onto the machine in some capacity?
Thanks
Charlie

You missed a step in the procedure to logon automatically.
Go back and run control userpasswords2
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Users must enter a
user name...".
Click OK.
A box pops up titled "Automatically Log on".
By default the Adminstrator account is listed in the User name
box.
You need to change that entry to Owner.
Click OK twice and reboot.

Thanks for that Nep. This machine is my sisters now as I let her have it when
I got a new one. I have to travel to sort it as she is 30 minutes away but i
will have another go when I go over there. If I get locked out again is there
a way i can over ride the message for a password and get in. i am scared to
touch anything in case I get into the same loop?
Thanks
Charlie

Here are some things to look into before you attempt the
procedure:

1. Go to Control Panel and double click on User Accounts.
In the User Accounts window click on "Change the way users log
on or off".
Make sure there's a check mark in the boxes next to "Use the
Welcome Screen" and "Use Fast User Switching".
Hit the Apply Options button.
Now, if you have a problem logging on you should see a screen
displayed with an icon for the Owner account that you can click
on to logon.

2. If you're seeing the "Logon to Windows" box and it has
Adminstrator listed in the User name box do the following:
Click on where it says Adminstrator to highlight it. Hit the
Backspace key. Now enter Owner in that box and click OK.

As a reference, here's what the "Logon to Windows" box looks
like:

3. Going back to the step you missed, here's what the
"Automtically Log On" window looks like:

Keep in mind that when this box appears, you simply click on
where it says Administrator to highlight it and hit the
Backspace key. Enter Owner in the User name box and click OK
twice.

Good luck

Thanks again Nep. Had a little practice on my own machine and feel a bit
happier about it now. I will print this out and take it with me.
Thanks again

Nepatsfan,

Maybe you can help my problem too. My laptop suddenly since yesterday will
not allow any log-on. Just get the welcome window. When I try to log on to
the one user (me) it automatically goes into a lopp which a few seconds later
ends up back at the same welcome screen. There is no password on my user
account as I am the only one who uses it.

It is Windows XP Home edition.

Any ideas.

First off, you might want to post this as a new question. That
way you'll maximize the chances that someone who has run into
this problem sees your question and provides a possible
solution.

Any suggestions I could pass along would at best be a guess.
I've never run into this problem. For that reason I'm reluctant
to have you start trying things that could be totally
unproductive. It sounds like the problem you're dealing with
could be the result of either a corrupt user profile or a
virus. The solution for each differ significantly.

What I will suggest is that you try a few simple things to at
least narrow down the possibilities:

1. Reboot your laptop and see if you can logon in Safe Mode. To
do this start tapping on the F8 key as soon as you see some
activity on the display screen. Keep tapping the key until you
see the "Advanced Startup Options" menu. Select "Last Known
Good Configuration" by using the up and down keys on your
keyboard. Hit Enter.

2. If that doesn't help try the procedure again except this
time select "Safe Mode" from the menu. You should see the
Welcome Screen. Try selecting the icon for your account. If
that doesn't work, try selecting the built-in Adminstrator
account.
FYI, if you don't see the Welcome screen, reboot, go through
the F8 routine, select Safe Mode but this time hold down the
Shift key right after you hit the Enter key. This should take
you to the Welcome Screen.

Make sure to post the results in your new question. I'll check
back in this newsgroup and if you haven't gotten any useful
responses I'll pass along a few things you can try.

Good luck
