Windows 2000 Professional & Network Printer

I want a windows 98 user to share my printer; I set the printer to be shared
and when I go to the 98 pc, and attempt to access my computer on the network
neighborhood, I get a Logon screen for \\CompName\IPC$ with a request for a
login. I've tried every login I think think of -- I just want to share a
printer (and maybe a shared directory), what do I need to do.

If I go into Printers, Add printer from the 98 machine, my printer is not
listed under the network printers.

When I installed the printer on the 2000 pc, it gave me the option to
install other drivers so others could connect to my printer. Well, I tried
that and it told me to insert the Windows Server cd-rom -- I don't have
Windows Server, I have 2000 professional.

How can this be so difficult, I never used to have these problems!

Thanks.

To share a printer, you need to a) share the printer, b) have a local
account on that machine. I'm assuming that this is a home situation or
a non-Domain setup. Call the machine "Server". Call the local account
"myuser". Set its password to something you know, eg "password1"

On the 98 machine, call it "Client" you need to access the printer
with credentials from "Server". In other words, try connecting with
user "Server\myuser" and password "myuser".

I think with Win98 that you need to install the printer on the client
machine. "Printer" in this context means the printer driver software.

Greetings --

On the Win2K PC, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will
be able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly.
