It appears that one om my clients PC will not boot to
windows but instead boots directly to the following Dos
prompt with this message "you are using automatically
generated configuration files"

I cannot seem to get it it to load windows.

I found a hit about this message but it does ot indicate
how to get it to load Windows.

I thought I would run the repair from the CD but decided I
would try to post this meesage first.

Any help would be appreciated

Please post the contents of the hidden file "c:\boot.ini" here.

You probably have an invalid master boot record.
Boot with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com,
then run this command:

fdisk /mbr

You can also boot your machine into the Command
Console mode, then run these commands:

fixmbr
fixboot

Thanks very much. One question before I try the commands,
this will not affect any data correct or prevent any data
from currently being recovered?

Go back into the Comand Console and check these things:
- Do the hidden files c:\boot.ini, c:\ntldr, c:\ntdetect.com exist?
- Is c:\boot.ini still the same as in your previous post?

Now boot with your Win98 boot disk and run fdisk. Is your
drive C: the active partition?

Does your client use any propritary disk management
software such as OnTrack, or some third party compression
program? If so then running fixmbr could be destructive.
You can probably check this by temporarily running the
disk as a slave disk in some other Win2000 PC. If that PC
can read the disk then it is most likely a standard disk.

Is your client's PC free from viruses? Scan the disk while
it's running in the other Win2000 PC.

If you get a clean bill of health for both items then it should
be safe to run fixmbr.

At the same time it's a good idea to save all important
files prior to continuing with your repair efforts.

It appears that after running fdisk /mbr with no results
and then running fixboot , I now receive antldr missing or

I tried to put the disk in another 2000 machine and for
some reason now the only files that appear are the ntldr
ntdetect and booy.ini. The drive shows as a fat partition
an only 10mb. I know that the drive is 20 gb??

I am concerned that the previous data is unreadable.
Should it be there and is there any issue with FAT drives
in a 2000 machine running FAT32??

I would like ot copy te data at this point but I cannot
seem to read the entire contents???

When dealing with a problem machine, I sometimes have to
decide what is more productive: To persist with the repair
effort or to rebuild the machine. Your problem PC is probably
at the stage where I would rebuild it, then restore all user files
from backup.

If you decide to persist with your repair attempts then you
might be able to restore the missing partitions with one of
these tools. I have used the first successfully on a few occasions
but I have no experience with the others.

Thanks for getting back to me. After not hereing from you
I decided to purchase a similar utility and restored the
data.

However is there a way to get the partition back now that
I can read and edit the contents of it. All the datat is
present the drive shows close to 20 gb as one partition
and the other as 10 mb.

Right now if I install the hardrive as a slave it only
shows the 10mb partition.

you say that you can read and edit the data on your lost

However is there a way to get the partition back now that
I can read and edit the contents of it. All the datat is
present the drive shows close to 20 gb as one partition
and the other as 10 mb.

Right now if I install the hardrive as a slave it only
shows the 10mb partition.

When dealing with a problem machine, I sometimes have to
decide what is more productive: To persist with the repair
effort or to rebuild the machine. Your problem PC is probably
at the stage where I would rebuild it, then restore all user files
from backup.

If you decide to persist with your repair attempts then you
might be able to restore the missing partitions with
one
of
these tools. I have used the first successfully on a
few
occasions
but I have no experience with the others.

www.acronis.com (RecoveryExpert)
http://www.restorer2000.com/r2k.htm (to restore NTFS partitions)
http://www.hddrecovery.com.au
http://bootmaster.filerecovery.biz (has NTFS undelete tools too)

I tried to put the disk in another 2000 machine and for
some reason now the only files that appear are the ntldr
ntdetect and booy.ini. The drive shows as a fat partition
an only 10mb. I know that the drive is 20 gb??

I am concerned that the previous data is unreadable.
Should it be there and is there any issue with FAT drives
in a 2000 machine running FAT32??

I would like ot copy te data at this point but I cannot
seem to read the entire contents???

Go back into the Comand Console and check these things:
- Do the hidden files c:\boot.ini, c:\ntldr,
c:\ntdetect.com exist?
- Is c:\boot.ini still the same as in your previous post?

Now boot with your Win98 boot disk and run fdisk. Is your
drive C: the active partition?

Does your client use any propritary disk management
software such as OnTrack, or some third party compression
program? If so then running fixmbr could be destructive.
You can probably check this by temporarily running the
disk as a slave disk in some other Win2000 PC. If
that
PC
can read the disk then it is most likely a standard disk.

Is your client's PC free from viruses? Scan the disk while
it's running in the other Win2000 PC.

If you get a clean bill of health for both items
then
it
should
be safe to run fixmbr.

At the same time it's a good idea to save all important
files prior to continuing with your repair efforts.

It appears that after running fdisk /mbr with no results
and then running fixboot , I now receive antldr missing
or
corrupt error. I did not run the fixmbr since it pronped
me that I may lose the current partition

any further suggestions?

Thanks very much. One question before I try the
commands,
this will not affect any data correct or prevent any
data
from currently being recovered?

You probably have an invalid master boot record.
Boot with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com,
then run this command:

fdisk /mbr

You can also boot your machine into the Command
Console mode, then run these commands:

fixmbr
fixboot

I do not know the recovery tool you're using, hence I cannot
comment on its use and how to save the files that it makes
visible. Anyway, I strongly recommend that you resolve the
data issue first, before looking at the boot issue.

With respect to the boot issue: In order for Win2000 to boot,
you must have the three boot files you mentioned, plus the
Win2000 folder listed in c:\boot.ini (usually c:\WinNT). If,
as you wrote before, you have nothing other than the three
boot files, and if your recovery tool is unable to find your
former system folders, then you will have to re-install Win2000
from scratch.

Sorry about that what I am trying to say is that I can
only read the data using the recovery tool I mentioned
which is similar to what you reccomended. Ideally I would
like to correct the boot issue and be able to boot off the
drive using the correct partition. Is there something that
I can now do to the drive since I can edit the contents of
it. I would liek to correct the Ntldr issue so that I can
boot off it s I did before.
thanks again

Sorry, I don't understand your question. On the one hand
you say that you can read and edit the data on your lost
partition. On the other hand you ask how to get the partition
back. The two statements appear contradictory.

Thanks for getting back to me. After not hereing from you
I decided to purchase a similar utility and restored the
data.
