If you are not running some other anti-malware program which is intentionally
disabling Windows Defender (AVG, for example)--then I would recommend running
a repair of Windows Defender--start, control panel, add or remove programs,
windows defender, not sure of the keystrokes from there...

I have the same problem. My OS is XP with SP3. I also run AVG and Spybot.

I followed your instructions (start, control panel, add or remove programs,
windows defender, click here for support, repair) and the repair command did
not find WindowsDefender.msi. I did not find it via manual search either.
suggestions?

You have said that you are running AVG.

AVG disables Windows Defender.

So--what you are seeing is expected.

You say that you are running AVG.

AVG disables Windows Defender.

What you are seeing appears normal.

I also had Defender being turned off by AVG. I first noticed it after
clickign to upgrade from AVG 8.5 to 9.0. - running Window XP.
I also started getting blue screens about once a day, then computer restarts
fine. I tried uninstalling Defender and AVG separately , but still go blue
screens.

Are the blue screens related to the Defender-AVG issue?
