win98se upgrade to xp-pro question

Tim

Greetings,

I would like to use the 'upgrade' option to install xp w/ sp2,
which cd I have, on a win98se system. I have been running into
the problem that the setup fails just as it completes the
'copying files' process with a Windows exception or fatal
exception of the form

exception 0E @ 0028:xxxxxxxx
called from 0028:xxxxx in vxd vkd(01) + 000001D0

or

fatal exception 06 @ 0028:xxxxxxxx

I have been thru the ms knowledgebase articles and have tried
most everything. I have replaced all vmm32 files from the
original win98se disk. I have rebooted with a different
keyboard. I've tried running setup from hd. I'm rather out of
thoughts on this matter at this point.

fwiw, I did do a clean install of xp-sp2 without any problems.
But, I'd rather carry-over settings than completely reinstall.

Appreciate any thoughts, ....

Be well,

Tim

I can understand your desire to retain settings...but a clean install will
result in a more stable system. I think the time spent to re-create your
original settings is time well spent. You've probably already spent at least
as much time trying to get an answer to this problem than you would have
re-creating your settings.

By the way...if you have already done a clean install of XP, where are you
going to get your original settings from? Isn't it too late? Perhaps you
left out some detail.

Greetings,

You're probably right about the amount of time I've spent on the
situation. <s&g> As to the clean install ... simply, curiousity
using a disk with plenty of free space to see how much xp would
want: 1.6 gigs. I've got a 40gig maxtor hd around someplace
which I'll use for a clean install.

Thanks for the reply.

Be well,

Tim
