Upgrade from WIN98SE

Guest

Situation: HDD has failed totaly cannot boot or read from did have WIN98SE
upgraded to XP Home (by using a upgrade CD), have installed a new HDD and
tring to re-install XP Home.

Problem: I have tried to Install XP Home by installing from the CD to the
blank HDD this way it does not recognise the KEY that came with the disk (I
have the box and packaging if you need any other refrence), I have also have
pre-installed WIN98SE and then tried to upgrade but it says upgrade not
available new install only.

The Windows XP disk is original and not a copy and has the 'UPGRADE' marked
on it

If you could advise it would be appreicated

Thank you

It would appear that the Windows XP you are currently trying to
install is not an upgrade version. If it was then the upgrade from
the installed 98 SE would have proceeded okay. What does it say on
the label of your XP CD? Does it say anything about "for sale only
with a new computer system" or words to that effect? If so then what
you have is an OEM version CD and not the Retail Upgrade CD.

Are you sure that you are reading the key correctly? Sometimes these
keys are printed with a font that does not provide the greatest of
clarity, and it is easy to confuse G and 6, 8 and B, O and Q, and so
forth, I find that using a bit of magnification on the printed key
helps to clarify things.

Taking the two problems in combination (won't upgrade and invalid key)
is it possible that CDs somehow got mixed up and the CD from an OEM
version got into your retail box, and the CD from your retail version
is now where the OEM CD should be?

Good luck
