Win2K startup problem w/ keyboard & mouse

I can not get Windows 2000 to start up past the network logon screen because
the mouse and keyboard have apparently "disappeared". I have tried the
repair feature off the Win2K CD to no avail. I have even tried to reinstall
Windows 2000 but since the keyboard and mouse won't work, I can't make
selections. Any suggestions?

- Are they plugged into the correct sockets?
- Does the keyboard work before Win2000 starts up?
- Have you tried a warm boot rather than a cold boot?
- Have you tried a different keyboard & mouse?

I've tried various keyboards (all Compaq) and mouse to no avail. The
keyboard works to enter selections during the repair stage of restarting
with the Win2K CD but once it gets to the point of loading the Windows
drivers, it quits. The mouse never works during the start up. I have tried
re-installing Win2K but once I get to the point where I have to make a
keyboard entry, I'm hung up again. Since I get "feed back" to the keyboard
during the beginning stage of startup, I would have to believe that the
problem is not hardware related but rather software such as a bad/corrupted
driver? Any suggestions?

A couple of comments (but no solution):

- If your keyboard responds prior to Win2000 taking
off then it is obvious that the keyboard is OK and
that it is plugged into the correct port.

- If the keyboard goes dead during a clean installation
of Win2000 (i.e. not an upgrade or repair) then this
suggests a compatibility issue between the
motherboard and Win2000.

You may have to consult the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility
List (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=131303) and or
contact your motherboard manufacturer.
