Win2K Add/Remove Programs and Internet Explorer Script Errors

Mike

I am running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Workstation 5.00.2195 with Service Pack 4. I regularly use
Windows Update to apply all critical updates. I am current
through February 20, 2004. I periodically use Microsoft
RegClean.Exe 4.1.7364.1 to fix registery errors, usually
after removing programs that do not remove all of their
files and registry entries, like Zone Alarm 3.0.

Question 1
I recently installed Adobe Reader 6.0. I attempted to use
Add/Remove Programs to remove Adobe Reader 5.0. Add/Remove
Programs starts and I see two problems:

1) I see a message box from Add/Remove Programs that says:
An unexpected error occurred.
Class not registered.
res://appwiz.cpl/listbox.htc
line: 225

2) Add/Remove Programs also shows the following:
Currently installed programs:
There are no programs installed on this computer

I can scroll down the window and see the installed
programs list but when I highlight one of them the Change
Remove buttons are greyed out and not selectable.

I am not sure when this problem with Add/Remove programs
began.

Question 2
When I use Windows Help and run a keyword search on a
topic such as modem and then select the topic Adjust modem
speaker volume, I get a message box:

Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page
Line 224
Char: 5
Error: 'null' is null or not an object
Code: 0
URL:
mk:mad:MSITStore:C:\WINNT\Help\mode.chm::/MODE_change_volumn.h
tm
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
(buttons) Yes No

I am not sure when this problem with Windows Help began.

Hi

From the "Run" box try

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\appwiz.cpl

and
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\webvw.dll

and
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\mshtml.dll

You might try to reinstall IE, the article above also tells you how to do that.

See tip 6032 at http://www.jsiinc.com/reghack.htm as well

If this doesn't help, try to reinstall the OS service pack you already have
installed (or install a newer one if possible).

If the problem persists, you'll could do an in-place upgrade of the OS and see
if it helps:

Mike,

It's possible that the registry entries for the HTML Help ActiveX
control are broken. A number of the security patches and service packs
that Microsoft released last year are known to cause this problem,
including the cumulative security patches for Internet Explorer and
Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000.

You could try unregistering the ActiveX control and then
re-registering it by opening a Command Prompt window and entering the
following two commands:

regsvr32 /u <drive>:\winnt\system32\hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 <drive>:\winnt\system32\hhctrl.ocx
