Win xp will not boot up

My emachine computer freezes up at the screen saver.
Screen shows no icons. I can get to task manager when
first powering up, but nothing else. I am using XP Home
Edition. Help!

Did this just start happening? Have you installed anything lately? Is the screen
saver a built in XP version? Need more info.
