Win XP Pro Avance AC97 Audio

I am helping my brother in law trying to fix his puter. We built these machines about a year ago. The sound card is on the motherboard.

The computer will play, windows sounds, theme sounds, midis in stationery... But every time we try to play a wmv, or music on a cd from either the cd player and the dvd player... the computer crashes and reboots.

I updated all drivers, I used troubleshooting and went through settings. It all appears to be correct and there are not any newer drivers available.

Today I unchecked the mixer feature in properties for the AC 97 Audio and now it will play the videos, without crashing, but we have no sound.

Do you have any idea what is wrong with this puppy? Any suggestions?

This is a public newsgroup, where people just like you volunteer what time
and knowledge they have.

Generally, questions receive an answer if someone who happens to be reading
the newsgroup around the time you post thinks they know the answer or can at
least offer some helpful knowledge. No one is under any obligation to answer
a question. Even when a question is answered, it's up the OP (original
poster) to decide whether the answer sounds reasonable.

I thought the same way.I was under the impression that it was another area
of help for windows problems but it DOES seem that some get answered and some
don't for some reason. The questions that seem to be hard they leave alone
though an answer of any kind would be appreciated in this area for you only
come to these posts when Microsoft says they do not want to help you because
you do not want to pay the ridiculous amount of money they ask.I myself am
having trouble with my pc with sound. The sound disappears but when i go to
Soundman for a check it works and before my pc used to crash also.I have
found out it could be the CHIP on the MOTHERBOARD may be faulty. This was told
to me from the store tech from where i purchased it good thing i bought a
100% 3yr warranty so either Gateway fixes it or Best Buy.Hope you find your
problem also.
