Sound/audio problems for certain file types

Okay: mp3, wmv, realplayer, CD and DVD sound files all work. Embedded audio
files (myspace players, flash files, google video, youtube, midi, pretty much
any internet sound file) does not work, and neither do quicktime files on my
hard drive. When I try to play the quicktime files it says that there is no
audio hardwear installed, but obviously there is.

This problem started shortly after the AOL alert sounds were disabled. The
Windows system sounds also stopped working and the problem wasn't remedied by
resetting the AOL sounds to default. I checked all of the sound devices and
it says that they are all working properly.

I have never heard of anything like this happening before. Could somebody
tell me what is going on and how I can fix it?

I have the same problem. It started about the same time as yours.
Have you had any luck figuring this out?

I wonder if it was a patch or somethign we installed.

Fixed. I have 7.1 suround sound and the 3 plugs were in the wrong
place. My mobo does not use the correct color codes :(

Make sure
Rear cable (blue or black): To blue jack (line in).
Center/Subwoofer cable (orange, yellow or pink): To pink jack (mic in).
