Win XP key/registration

I recently purchased the FULL XP Home edition copy of XP
in anticipation of upgrading my laptop. Even though the
computer had Win98, I opted for the full version.

However, XP took up most of the C partition, leaving me
with precious little space left. Rather than kinkering
with the partitions, I think it wiser to buy a new 80G
drive for the hundred bucks rather than partition magic
for 80.

That said however, I heard that the Xp has a
registration "key" allowing its use one time only. If
this is the case, do I need to "uninstall" thereby
retaining that copy for my new hard drive?

Buy the drive, use the transfer utility that comes with it
or you can download from the makers site or get a real
program and use the old one for backup.

XP-Casper is one.

You're right, Chris. If you have already activated XP, then you'll need a
separate license for the new drive.

In your case, you may get some help from Microsoft but I wouldn't hold my
breath!

If you have the retail version you should have no problem reinstalling this
to another drive. It may or may not require you to contact M$ to activate,
but no more hassle than that. It is only OEM copies that can be installed
on one machine, this does not apply to retail.

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the Internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.
