WIA Support problem

Whereas once I could start Photoshop and select File/Import and then get
pictures from my digital camera or scanner I now find that neither
devices are listed. If I click on File/Import/WIA Devices it tells me
that 'No WIA compatible devices were detected'
Also in Control Panel/Scanners and Cameras none are listed.
Furthermore, I could previously see my Camera listed as a drive from
within Windows Explorer but now I can't.
I have un-installed the drivers and software for both Camera and Scanner
and then re-installed them. Still no luck!
However, the camera is detected by the Kodak Easyshare software which I
would prefer not to use. I'm running XP Home SP2 and using a Kodak
DX6440 camera and an Epson Perfection 3490 scanner.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

P.S.
I don't know if it's relevant but a while previous to noticing this
problem I'd installed Windows Desktop Search and shortly afterwards
un-installed it

Ensure the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is set to automatic and
has started.

Control Panel (Classic View) > Administrative Tools > Services > Locate and
double-click "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)". Set the startup type to
"Automatic" and then click the Start button.

----

You could also set the WIA service to Automatic startup and then start the
service by typing the two following commands in the Command Prompt:

sc config stisvc start= auto

sc start stisvc

Thanks for your suggestion.
Unfortunately, it hasn't helped. WIA was already set to Auto. I tried
stopping and restarting it and ran the commands you outlined.
When attempting to import from any Image software I get the following:
'No WIA compatible devices detected...'
As before, the Camera & Scanner do not show up in Control Panel/Scanners
& Cameras!

Oh well, having spent far too long trying to cure the problem I did a
system restore and now all is back to normal.
Thanks for help anyway
