Why does XP always prompt me for USB drivers that is already has installed?

Hello.

Here is the scenario. I attached my Microsoft USB mouse and Microsoft
USB keyboard to my new laptop and they began working without a hitch
(only the helpful little bubble above the system tray told me what was
happening). Then I ran into external hardd drive (USB) driver issues,
so I removed all USB devices physically from my computer, and then
from Device Manager.

The problem is now everytime I detach/reattach my same old devices
(USB Hub, Mouse, Keyboard, and IR Receiver), I have to go through the
overcomplicated process of it recognizing my device, prompting me
whether I want to let windows find the driver or specify the locaiton,
then I get the stupid "Windows logo testing" failure, and one minute
later I have one device installed. Imagine this for all my devices:

Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2 (twice)
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D7
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24DE
USB Root Hub (5 times)
USB Composite Device

I would VERY much appreciate help because I know something is wrong!
I have disabled the windows logo testing, but this only eliminated one
step.

Thank you for your time.

Hi.

The USB drivers are probably corrupt. You should try removing your USB root
and USB host controllers from device manager and restart windows. when you
restart windows it should install the USB drivers. If this doesn't work have
a look on the net to see if there are any new drivers for the USB on your
Laptop.

thanks for getting back to me.

I have done what you suggested before, but let me clarify to ensure I
am doing things correctly. Boot into safe mode, physically unplug my
USB devices, remove the USB roots followed by the host controllers in
Device Manager, restart windows into safe mode, finally re-inserting
my USB devices; sound good?

one concern I have is that my computer wants to install various
"Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller"; shouldn't Windows XP
have some "Standard" default host controllers, or is this
motherboard-dependent?

My laptop is less than 3 months old and I have installed all XP
critical updates, so any idea how I can resinstall good USB drivers or
find updates?

thanks again

USB controllers are chipset specific, whether they be
SIS, ALI, VIA or Intel.
