You threw the files in the Recycle Bin right? If so, just undelete them.
If you didn't, use System Restore to bring the sound back.

Not so lucky. Been working at this for a month now, had hard time makeingt any space on disk. got to the level of using a Regcure and I got rid of old restore points in sys restore. have emptied trash, etc. I dont have a disk this is a refurbished system. can i somehow check for what i need and somehow get the files online?

Who provided the PC, the vendor should have provided a method of
restoring to factory fresh installation including license and operating
system files. If this is not a legitimate system, then you need to buy
an legit copy of the operating system.

Try going to the Realtek website and downloading the latest AC'97 driver for
your sound card. Reinstall the driver and reboot the machine. Did that work?
