Did Sony Rip me Off?

Hello: I have a Sony Vaio PCVRS420 Desktop Computer running Win XP Home.
Every time I try to connect a USB 2.0 device into any of my computer's 8
ports, an error comes up: A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non
HI-SPEED USB hub. The Sony Support Team asked me to uninstall the SP2 Update,
but the problem remained. I decided to use the Vaio Recovery CD to restore my
computer and it still the same. I've tried several USB 2.0 devices with their
respectives cables and all I get is the same error. I checked in the device
manager and no - USB "Enhanced" Host Controllers - are present, only
"Universal". I already uninstalled the USB Controllers and Hubs, but as soon
as I restart my computer, the same drivers get installed automatically.

I have a Sony PCV-RZ34G and I experience the same problem. I found that
there are USB 2.0 ports and USB 2.0 hi-speed ports and Sony uses the normal
USB 2.0 ports.

I bought a Belkin 4 port USB 2.0 hi-speed PCI card to install in to the
system to have USB 2.0 hi-speed ports.

System specs for your computer model shows 8 usb2 ports. What version of
Windows XP are you running? SP1 or better should be used to add USB2
support. Am surprised they told you to uninstall SP2. If this was my
system, I would be back on the phone with Sony.

Hey Mark!!! I dont know where did you get that info but I dont think that is
my case and neither yours. USB 2.0 is the same as Hi-Speed or Full Speed, and
it also compatible with classic USB 1.x. I'll tell you if I can get Sony to
correct this issue so you can do the same.

I'm reasonably sure all USB 2.0 ports are the same. Where did you hear this
from?

Ok I've checked and there IS a difference HOWEVER it has nothing to do with
your problem.

"USB 2.0" is the standard and the one most people have on the back of their
PC these days. It supports three different rates...

• Low speed, up to 1.5 Mbps
• Full speed, up to 12 Mbps
• Hi-Speed, up to 480 Mbps

The first two above are USB 1.1 rates so that means "USB 2.0" is backwards
compatible with USB 1.1.

It therefore appears likely that a "Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device" ONLY supports
the 480Mbps rate and so isn't compatible with USB 1.1.

The error message you got was "A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non
HI-SPEED USB hub" which means your computer thinks it's USB 1.1 only. This
is confirmed by the lack of a "Enhanced Host Controller" driver. You need to
get that "Enhanced Host Controller" installed somehow and all should be
well.

Is the high speed mode for the USB ports enabled in the system's BIOS
settings?

I ask because in my own system (Asus A8V mainboard), the default BIOS
settings are for full speed, rather than high.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I found a Sony Knowledge Base article stating the difference some time ago.

However, after reading the following information on USB.org:

http://www.usb.org/developers/usb20/faq20/
Hi-Speed FAQ

http://www.usb.org/developers/usb20/backgrounder/
USB Specification Expanding, Boosting Performance
Up to 40 Times Beyond Current Capability

I know there is some USB driver or USB ports not correct on the Sony PC.

I found these articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the USB 2.0
hi-speed message:

How to turn off the "Hi-speed USB device plugged into non-hi-speed USB hub"

There is no such setting in the BIOS for USB.

This is why I gave up on trying to fix this problem on the Sony PCV-RZ34G
system and bought the Belkin 4 port USB 2.0 hi-speed PCI card.

I reinstalled the Intel chipset drivers without no change.

I tried to fix this USB 2.0 problem for over six months before giving up.
Sony Support was of no help too.
