Why does unread email open when it is not clicked on to open?

Why will an unopened/unread email open when I click on a different
unread/unopend email?
 
If you are using the Reading Pane, there is a Tools, Options setting which
"Marks item as read when viewed in Reading Pane". On the Other tab of
Options dialogue.
