Why are opened inbox e-mails unopened after program restart

When I open unread e-mails in my inbox, after the program has been restarted,
the most recently opened emails change to unopened/not read again.

When you say you open the unread messages, so you mean you read them in the
Reading Pane or that you double-click them to open them in a separate window?

I read the e-mail in the reading pane. The e-mail changes to read in the
inbox but when I close the program and reopen it later, the last few e-mails
show up as not read in the inbox again. It's a recent issue and it's only a
few of the most recent e-mails.
Thank you!

What type of account are you using? Exchange? POP? IMAP? What are your
Reading Pane settings? Right-click the small gray border round the Reading
Pane and choose Reading Pane options. What do you see?

Is there a way to automatically re-open messages that were open in separate
windows on outlook restart? Outlook hangs a couple of times a day and I do
not always remember which messages I opened (intending to respond). Thank
you!

I don't think Outlook can do that for specific messages.
