why does my word document print out the Format - background, fill

I created a flyer in Word. I added pictures to it. I used the tools:
Format
background
fill effects
On the screen it looks like how I want it to look.
When it prints out, the document is full of "little squares" of the fill
effects. How can I make it so it is without the "little squares" and the fill
effects are for the whole document?
Thank you.
PS - I just did this as a favor for someone.

You don't say what version of Word you're using.

If you're still working on this and still totally stumped, try putting the
background in the header or footer of the page as a watermark.
