why does MPLayer 9 after SP3 work only in admin mode?

System: AMD Athlon 1,7+, WinXP Home SP3

Hi all,
after upgrading from SP2 to SP3, the media player 9 (and 11) works only in
admin mode correctly, i. e., when playing avi, wmf or mpg files, both sound
and video are displayed only when I am logged-in as administrator. When I am
logged-in as normal user with restricted rights, only the sound is played,
and instead of the video I see a black screen. Surprisingly, the old MS
mplayer2 (version 6) still shows both sound and video. Under SP2, everything
was ok with MPlayer 9.

My guess is that SP3 somehow changed user-rights in the registry. But I am
not expert enough to know where and how to amend it.

Can anybody help, please?

Thank you,

siggi

Interesting site but it is not in English.

So what? I'd be glad to help you with translation if need be. E.g., this
http://www.der-wmp.de/index.htm#xpsp3fix stuff is an automated version of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377/en-us (subpoint "Method 1: Reset the
registry and the file permissions".
After having done xpsp3fix, my WMPlayer was just fine, but I had "lost" the
local non-admin-accounts on my WinXP Home. No problem, follow
http://www.wintotal.de/Tipps/index.php?id=1013, which you would also not
like because it is not English. No worries, it is an abbreviated version of
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490706.aspx. This deals with
how to see which groups a user is in, how to remove or add users to groups.
I just had to add the non-admin-users again to the Usergroup they had been
separeted from. With my WinXP Home, the windows versions don't work, but the
cmd.exe commands are just fine!
Another possibility to prevent "loss" of user accounts, is to give all
users admin-rights before doing xpsp3fix. This will prevent "loss" (as I
found out). After that, just deprive them of their admin rights.

Merry Christmas!
