MPG Video does not play in PPT

I have a series of video clips which will play in Windows Media Player -AND-
mplayer2.exe, but -NOT- in PowerPoint. Every troubleshooting guide I can find
through links on the board here always assumes that if you can play it in
mplayer, you can play it in PPT, but that simply isn't helping me.

I did find a few references to DRM blocking media, and am guessing that this
might be the cause, however there shouldn't be any DRM, since I filmed the
video with my camera, exported it myself with the camera software, cut and
edited as desired, and at no point assigned licensing / copyright to it.

Any tips for troubleshooting this?

Sometimes it's just the path to the folder, which is too long. Copy your
presentation AND you video into a folder with a short path, e.g. C:\test.
Does it play there? Additionally you can delete any spaces and special
characters in the video's file name (a - z, 0 - 9, - and _ are ok) and
re-insert it.

The path was long, but moving the video to C:/ did not change it. Total
character length of the path went to 19 characters, and it still does not
play in PPT. The video 'window' flickers momentarily before reverting to
complete black.

I found I can get it to play if I embed Window Media Player in an object
within the slide, and point the video path to the video location, however
this is less than ideal since it will be a distributed video, and it appears
I need the full path to get it to work this way, so it wouldn't work if
copied off the CD or network drive.
