SP3 has killed my computer how to recover

L

Late Night Guy

I had a virus attack my pc and after all was said and done we formatted the
HD and reloaded windows 2x... got sp2 uploaded and the system crashed with
a blue screen for compliance problems.

as i was looking for an updated bios from the motherboard mfg sp3 installed.
and of course it rebooted..........

now my system will not boot. i get the windows screen and when it should go
to the user screen it goes black and dies. when i attempt to load safe mode
it hangs on or after loading the file Mup.sys.

My version of XP is prior to SP1 :)

so i have a question.

How do i remove the sp3 so i can attempt to recover my pc with out having to
reinstall XP home for the 3rd time in 4 days.

I dont have a floppy drive so using a boot only disk is probably out.
i do have several flash drives but i dont know if i can use that to boot
from.

my system is as follows.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard
Drive

GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4 AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

SIGMA ORCA-WBP Black SECC STEEL ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 400W Power Supply

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel
Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL6D-4GBMQ

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card

SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black PATA Model SH-S202G

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor 2.8GHz Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor

PNY VCG85512GXPB GeForce 8500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 SLI
Supported Video Card

i am becoming frustrated at trying to find a solution to this problem. so i
am very willing to ask a pro and hope for the best. and if i have no choice
i will reformat and start over again but i am hoping that one of the wiser
people here can give me the advice i need to recover this system.

See if you can boot to safe mode with a command prompt by using the F8 key.
If so:

Type: CD $ntservicepackuninstall$ \spuninst hit enter

Type: batch spuninst.txt hit enter

Type: exit hit enter

i have already tried to get into safe mode several times. it starts to load
and always stalls after loading the file Mup.sys

so safe mode is out but thank you for the information.

Well i have tried everything i can. one site states that this problem can
occur if the SP3 install makes an error and loads the Intel Drivers in place
of the AMD drivers.

But with out the ability to safe boot the pc and or boot to dos as i don't
have a floppy drive and the system bios will not let me boot from a flash
stick i am stuck.

looks like i will have to Load the system for the 3rd time in 4 days.
authenticated again for the 3rd time in 4 days and upload sp2 then disconnect
the network so i can fix what ever the driver, bios problems are prior to
permitting SP3 to install on my system.

i hope someday a very smart person at MS can come up with a simple fix for
people like me when they don't have a floppy drive and safe mode is not
working.

i will attempt the recover one more time from my install CD but i have no
expectation that it will work.

i will check back here one more time prior to the reformat, reload of the
system to see if anyone has a bright idea.

Thanks for your time

if you can not access
the system via the
standard method,

then you will have to
access the disk via
a boot disk, a rescue
disk or

uninstall that drive
and install it as a slave
into another functioning
computer.

or you can make a
windows sp3 cd via
slipstream on someone's
computer

then try the repair installation
method, which is not provided
via your sp2 cd.

--------------------------

when ever you install winxp
you should always remove
any specialty boards and
disconnect everything from
the unit except your

kb, monitor and mouse.

also, it is imperative that
when ever winxp is re-installed,

that you follow the mother
boards manufacturers advice
(available from the homesite)

because you may have to
download and reapply their
drivers first.

What are the "compliance problems"? If the message is that the BIOS must be
upgraded, then you should have obtained the upgrade to the BIOS from the
manufacturer and installed it before doing anything else.

You should not have tried to install sp3 to a questionable system.

Since the system will not boot, my only suggestion is a clean install of XP
SP1.

The compliance problem only showed up one time as a blue screen (note was
running this same pc fully upgraded for 8 months prior to the virus prob.) i
have contacted the MB company about the bios question and am still waiting a
reply.

i did not plan to install the sp3 patch but my wife is ever so helpful while
i was in the back yard pushed the yes i agree and installed the software to
help me out....

i have also tried to use the method first suggested via the install cd in
the Repair mode. it ran for several moments and still has not fixed the
problem. so having done all i can i am going to bite this one and start my
3rd full install in as many days. i am sure that by now the wonderful folks
at the authorization center are beginning to wonder why i have had to do this
so many times....

Depends whether you have driver disks for your hardware or not as to the
method used.
You clean install winxp and use the drivers cd's if requested.
Then run winupdate and install only critical updates.
Then visit your hw manufacturers sites and install their drivers.
Then back to winupdate again for critical updates
You do NOT install driver updates from MS Update

so safe mode is out but thank you for the information.

I had a problem with mup.sys once a long time ago. I hate to see my
startup even slow down there! It was one of my my CD drives. I
disconnected the cables and powers to get past the hang in safe mode
at mup.sys. Then put them back one at a time to isolate the bad one,
and replaced it.

You may not be able to do much without a CD drive, but it would be
interesting to know if unhooking them (one or both may be the problem,
but maybe just one) temporarily will get past mup.sys, maybe long
enough to follow the uninstall ideas posted earlier or some other
things.

....and sp3 is NOT required and can be prevented from being installed:

when you prompted to install sp3 and you uncheck it and watch for the
opportunity to check the box for not to see the prompt for the sp3 again.

Officially, MS will push SP3 onto any XP. Their so called patch to
block Sp3 is supposed no longer work. You will have to make sure to
not update SP3 manually.

Correct, just not a full explanation (IMO):

The tool (it is not a patch) you speak of:

Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool Kit
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...7a-5267-4bd6-87d0-e2a72099edb7&displaylang=en

However, take note: "Windows XP Service Pack 3 (valid until May 19th, 2009)"

However - here's the kicker. You can set your computer so it does not
download and install anything without your go ahead and you could run
Windows XP RTM (Released to Manufacturing - no Service Packs at all) until
you dies, if you so desired.

Sooner (rather than later now) you will stop receiving other security
updates/patches unless you have SP3 (and some newer software may state they
only support Windows Xp SP3 or greater when it comes to OSes) - so it may be
better for you to fix whatever problem *your* machine has so you can install
SP3 whether than just 'doing without'. Of course - that is a personal
choice.

I am not an expert by any means, so the following comments may
have nothing do do with the OP's particular problem. However, I
notice that his system uses an AMD Athlon processor.

I believe that when Microsoft released SP3, a major compatibility
issue affected some (but not all) computers with AMD processors.
The problems occurred, where the Windows installation was build
from an OEM image captured on an Intel-based system. In such
cases, and depending on a particular registry key, an
Intel-specific driver (Intelppm.sys) was loaded.

The knowledgebase article at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953356/en-us contains a detailed
explanation.

Google searches against "AMD Athlon Windows XP SP3" and "AMD
Intelppm.sys" produced some interesting results. I vaguely
recall that to prevent these problems, the user should download
and run a "fix", before attempting the installation of SP3.
However, I have been unable to find the details or download
location of the "fix".

If that is the cause of the problem, I am sure someone will be
able to point the OP in the right direction.
