SP3 and Compaq XP MCE Killed normal booting

Well, applied XP3 and my XP would not boot. What a pita. Turns out to be
an issue with AMD processors and the quality of SP3's patching. Managed to
boot into safe mode and used another system to surf to find the answer.

Renaming intelppm.sys to intelppm.old fixed it for me. Fortunately I could
get to safe mode to do this.

Pass it on, SP3 does not appear to be AMD or Compaq friendly. Another
poorly tested piece of Microsoft software. Microsoft ought to pull this
ASAP and FIX IT. Or there will be a lot of crippled XP systems....AMD
sells a lot of CPUs.... as does HP/Compaq.

Unfortunately for you, this AMD chip issue has been reported and seems
Microsoft knows and fixes have been posted. You just missed it.
I think it got plastered on the internet yesterday morning or so (at
least that I saw).
Here is a different link.

probably says the same thing.

Maybe you should do a little more research. If you did, you woulld see that
this is not a Microsoft issue. But you might ask the people at Compaq why
they included an Intel power management driver with your AMD system. If
you're going to bash MS, at least bash them for something that is their
fault.

I haven't tried SP3 yet but I did try a beta on a install of XP and it
worked fine. The PC is AMD based so I don't see how it can be a problem with
all AMD processors.

It's not. It is an issue related to certain computers running a
preinstalled version of Windows.
