Why can only one computer on my network "see" the other computer?

G

I have a two computer network.
This computer "MMPHOTO" can access the "DIMENSION" computer's Shared files
(and printers). It can read and update them. However, something is wrong with
MMPHOTO as automatic services such as Computer Browser and Windows Firewall /
ICP must be started manually to achieve this status.
File system is FAT32. Diagnostics follow:

I had previously been able to share files with another computer that is
since retired. I also had been able to join the computers to play a game thru
the network (now neither computer "sees" the other's game). Both computers
are running the latest version of McAfee and both can "see" the other from
within McAfee.

Thanks for your response, Chuck. I had previously tried many options and
resolved many errors using your site - when I started, neither computer had
any access to the other.

The status described and the diagnostics provided were with Browser
(including Server and Workstation) and WF/ICP running. While I haven't run
through an exhaustive combination of the services, I know that MMphoto could
not access Dimension (even though it should be the master browser) without
having at least Server and Workstation on.

NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers.

I did adjust McAfee on both computers to ensure that ports 137-139 were open
- no change in MMPhoto, but Dimension can now see the files in Network Places
but cannot open them because "not enough server storage is available to
process the command"). NTFS vs FAT32 problem?

Both computers are running XP SP2 and have the latest updates applied.

Before trying an uninstall of McAfee would Cdiag runs be worthwhile (it will
be a pain to remove it). And, I had Norton on her previously and
intentionally installed McAfee to ensure that the firewalls were identical.

Don,
1) When the 2 services are running, do the access and visibility problems go
away completely?
2) Do the problems stay away while the 2 services are running?
3) Did you try with only one service running?
4) When does the problem comes back?

The browser is a known problem, when WF is not running.
<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=889320>
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=889320

You say that MMPhoto has the services problem, but Dimension is the master
browser. If the browser service isn't running on MMPhoto, Dimension as the
master browser should provide what MMPhoto needs.

Is NetBT Enabled on both computers, and McAfee configured to pass TCP/UDP
137,138,139, on both computers?

If both computers are running XP SP2 or better, and if you don't get a solution
relatively quickly, I'll recommend that you un install McAfee completely, using
all instructions from McAfee.

Don,

"not enough server storage is available to process the command"
is a well known but obscure setting, generally caused by your anti-virus
program. Fix that, then revisit your diagnostics.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/server-functionality-affected-by.html

I suspect that CDiag would help us at least enumerate the problems more closely.
I'll take a look, if you want to post the logs.

Thanks for reviewing. I tried repeatedly with IRPStacksize changes, ending up
at 48 and still no progress. To further assist I added a laptop to the
network. It can fully communicate with Dimension and visa versa; mmphoto can
access its shared files but, as with dimension, mmlaptop cannot access
mmphoto files.

The CDiag files overflowed the text limit, so I'm going to simply include
those from two of the computers.

Thanks again for your time.

OK, I don't see a problem, in CDiag, with either Dimension or MMPhotos. Which
computer did you change IRPStacksize on? The problem is in MMPhotos. If that's
where you changed IRPStacksize, then un install McAfee, following instructions
from the vendor. Then check IRPStacksize again.

Thanks, Chuck. The problem is finally solved. However, I had to start from
scratch. I rebuilt the disk as NTFS, reloaded Windows XP (unfortunately the
original, no Service Packs), etc. So it has taken a long time. But, all of
the original issues with services not starting, other computers not being
able to access MMPHOTO have gone away. Thanks for your time.
