Chuck, Help! File sharing network issue

G

Guest

I have 3 computers in a home network, all running XP home. They are connected
via ethernet to a switch. The switch is connected to a router. The router
connects to my cable modem.

All 3 computers can use the internet separately. I can play games on my
local network against each computer.

The problem is I cannot access the shared folder on 2 of the 3 machines.
Each machine can access the same one, but that is the only machine with file
sharing access.

Also, "My Network Places" has migrated the folders from "Local Network" to
"The Internet". I don't know if this migration is linked to my access problem.

No machine needs any other machine to be on in order to browse the internet.

I've checked the obvious (to me) things and I'm stumped. I've included the
outputs from the following programs for each of the three computers: ipconfig
/all, browstat status, cpsserv, and net config - both server and workstation.
The computers are named "kensgateway", "kidscomputer", and "carolyncomputer".

Thank you for taking the time to look through this and help me out!

Regards,
Ken

I have 3 computers in a home network, all running XP home. They are connected

connects to my cable modem.

All 3 computers can use the internet separately. I can play games on my

Regards,
Ken

Start with CAROLYNCOMPUTER, with IPX/SPX and NetBEUI. Get rid of both!

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

But the fact that you have computers visible not in "Local Network" but "The
Internet" makes me think that you have a personal firewall issue. Both Norton
Internet Security and Zone Alarm will, if not configured properly, cause "My
Network Places" to show other computers on the LAN in "The Internet".

But get rid of excessive protocols first, then rerun browstat on all 3
computers. Browstat will be the best tool here.

Chuck,

Thank you for helping me with this. I've been called out of town, so I'll
have to wait a few days before I can do what you suggest. I'll bump this up
when I do so.

More information: I WAS running Norton's Systemworks 2006 on all 3 machines,
but after reading in several places about how that suite seems to cause
problems, I used the Norton SRT program to delete it from all machines. (Now
running Kaspersky AV.)

Again, thank you,

Ken

Chuck,

I've done as you suggested and disabled the un-needed protocols on
carolyncomputer, then I ran browstat on all 3 computers. The outputs from
browstat status are included, below, at the end of this message.

You wrote that carolyncomputer had 2 extra protocals, IPX/SPX and NetBEUI. I
only found, and uninstalled NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios. There was another NWLink
IPX/SPX listed, but the uninstall option for that was greyed out. After I
uninstalled the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios, the OTHER NWLink was no longer listed.

Additionally, following the links on your (excellent!) PChuck website, I dug
into my NetBIOS settings. All 3 computers have NetBIOS set to "Default". I
did not change that because I felt that troubleshooting should be done one
step at a time. :) However, I include that information in case it has a
bearing on the lack of filesharing access.

Finally, I am once again being called away for a couple of days. I'll check
back up on Tuesday. I really appreciate the help you are providing. Thank you.

Ken

Ken,

NetBT set to "Default" is appropriate on a LAN with a real DHCP server (not a
NAT router). With a NAT router, set it to "Enable", or configure the firewall
properly. And be consistent!

Chuck,

I'm back in town, so I can dig into this a lot more now.

Your statement below, "NetBT set to "Default" is appropriate on a LAN with a
real DHCP server (not a NAT router). With a NAT router, set it to "Enable",
or configure the firewall properly. And be consistent!", has me confused.

I don't know the differences between DHCP and NAT routers. I also am
ignorant as to which terminology describes my home network. (3 machines
plugged into a switch.)

Should I change NetBIOS to "Enabled" on all 3 computers?

I apologize for my lack of knowledge in this area.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Ken

Ken,

In a business network, you'd have a router connecting your LAN to the outside
world. And you'd have one or more servers, one of which would do nothing but
serve DHCP addresses and other settings, to the LAN computers. One setting
would be the NetBT setting - On or Off.

A NAT router, which is what you have, knows nothing about NetBT. You have to
explicitly Enable NetBT, for consistency, on all 3 computers, and set the
firewalls appropriately.

Thank you for that explanation. Before I change any settings, I want to be
sure I understand that explanation!

Because my LAN is set up through a switch, I must explicitly enable NetBT.
The setting which does this is called "NetBIOS" and I set this, not to
"default" - where it is now on all 3 machines, but to "enable".

Is that correct?

As for firewalls, I am using the Windows XP firewall on all 3 computers.
What setting would I use to ensure the firewall allows the 3 computers access
to each other's shared files?

Thank you,
Ken

Ken,

The NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is a very easily misunderstood setting. It's a
checkbox, and from the name, you'd seem to be enabling "NetBIOS" over TCP/IP (as
opposed to what?). Actually, you're Enabling Server Message Blocks (SMBs) over
"NetBIOS Over TCP/IP", as opposed to SMBs directly hosted on IP. And the SMBs
involved affect multiple issues on your computer:
# The browser (ability to see other computers).
# Name resolution (ability to find out the addresses of other computers).
# File sharing (ability to access resources on other computers).
# Firewall filtering (SMBs use different ports in either case).

Chuck,

At the risk of monopolizing more of your time, I must admit that I am
thoroughly confused now! I only THOUGHT I was confused before....

I set all computers to enable NetBIOS. That did not change anything.

Then, again digging into your website, using the link you provided below,
the applicable situation seems to be my ipconfig /all showing all three node
types as "unknown". Your site, and Microsoft's knowledge base, seem to
suggest that I run regedit and modify my "EnableProxy" value to either 1 or
0. Is this correct?

That for my situation, a LAN with a switch with NO internet connection
problems, but with file sharing access problems, that a regedit enableproxy
value change is indicated as the next step in troubleshooting?

How difficult would it be to completely eradicate any networking artifacts
from my computers and try to start from scratch? (I am assuming that
following the network setup wizard somehow led me into an erroneous
configuration.)

Thank you,

Ken

Ken,

The NetBT setting is where you start. If you have another problem (not uncommon
here), you have to work on that problem next. Node Type "Unknown" is normally
NOT a problem.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html

Let's look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, HERE, and diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Chuck,

Again, I have 3 computers on a LAN. So far I have turned off NWLink on
"Carolyncomputer" and explicitly enabled NetBIOS on all 3 machines.

Here is the output from ipconfig /all, browstat status, net config server
and net config workstation for all 3.

Note: "kidscomputer" did not show anything on "my network places" other than
"local network\shared doc's on kids computer" for two days. The portion "the
internet" did not appear, despite normal internet functionality. Now, "the
internet" is there, with the shared doc's folders for "carolyn computer" and
"kens gateway" in place. It only has access to shared doc's on "kens gateway".

Again, this is the same for all 3 machines: the machine's own shared doc's
folder shows in the "local network" location. The other two show under "the
internet". The only folder accessible to ANY computer is the shared doc's
folder for "kens gateway".

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

You have a classic segmented LAN.

Kensgateway and CAROLYNCOMPUTER are both in workgroup MINIWEB, and have elected
CAROLYNCOMPUTER as master browser. Kidscomputer is in workgroup HOME, and has
elected itself.
# Pick a workgroup, and put all 3 computers in there together.
# Power all 3 computers down.
# Power CAROLYNCOMPUTER up, and login.
# Power the other two computers up, and login.
# Rerun browstat on all 3 computers.

Chuck,

Thank you. We've cross-posted, so ignore my previous post. THIS one is in
reply to your message.

I am embarrassed that I missed the obvious workgroup error. That is now
fixed; all machines are on MINIWEB and all have been restarted. As requested,
I have run browstat on them again. That is included, below.

The symptons remain the same: Own machine shows on "Local Network"; the
other two show under "Internet", and only "kensgateway" shared doc's folder
is accessible to any computer.

Thanks again! Even if this never gets resolved, I am indebted to you.

Regards,
Ken

OK, Ken,

You have all 3 computers now in the one domain, and all recognise
CAROLYNCOMPUTER as the master browser. So now you have to look for a personal
firewall, or other security component, as a problem.
