Problem Sharing Files in a Home Network

G

Guest

Hello Chuck:

It’s me again… I think I yelled “victory†too soon…

I can see and access shared files from AJVC to LEVC but, from LEVC, I can
see AJVC in the Workgroup but I keep getting the message…

“You don’t have access to //Ajvc. You might not have permission to access
this network resource. Please contact the resource administrator to confirm
you have access. Access Denied†(The message above is a translation, I
get it in Spanish)

Every time I try to access the shared folders at AJVC from LEVC.

I went through your site and searched about this problem. I found the ERROR
5 page and read all of it, including the Guest Authentication and
Restrict-Anonymous pages; I checked all your suggestions and I see nothing
different from what you show in your website…

OK, lets try again.

Browstat on both is clean, so Windows Networking is probably good.

You just don't have access between Ajvc and Levc. Either way.

You need XP Pro with Advanced File Sharing, using non-Guest authentication.
Guest or “Invitado” account won't give you the proper access.

Is it necessary to have Advance File Sharing? I prefer to keep my simple
file sharing option. What should I try next?

Thanks!

You can use Simple File Sharing, if you wish. You just won't be able to access
all of the portions of the hard drive. You've read the limitations of Guest
authentication:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest

So you tell me, are you OK with those limitations?

Now, you have to be patient. In order for file sharing to work, all of the
possible problems have to be fixed. So, we check everything, one item at a
time.

Node Type "difusión" = broadcast?

Since browstat shows both computers seeing each other, I'd start by making sure
that you setup a common, non-Guest account with identical non-blank password on
both computers. And gave that account administrative authority on both
computers. AND leave Advanced File Sharing activated (SFS deactivated) on both
computers til we figure this out.

Chuck:

I know the limitations of Simple File Sharing but, let's do it your way.
I'll activate Advanced File Sharing on both computers..

As of today, I don't select a User when I turn on the computer. At AJVC, for
instance, when you hit "Start" you'll see "Antonio" at the top of the menu,
that´s the current User (Is that the user-user or the user-full name?). At
LEVC the user at the top of the menu when you hit "Start" is "Leonor"

If a setup a new identical account for both computers let's say:
Account Name: NET
Account Full Name: NETWORK ACCESS
Description: ACCOUNT TO ACCESS HOME NETWORK
Password: xxxx
Member of: ADMINISTRATOR

That would mean that everytime I turn on the computer I'll be asked to start
the sesion as "NET" and "Antonio" at AJVC and "NET" and "Leonor" at LEVC?

And yes, "Difusion" is "Broadcast".

Thanks!

I'm not Chuck, but the answer is "no".

1. When you create identical user accounts/passwords on all machines,
you do not need to be logged in as the user on the remote machine who
wants to access the resources. If Leonor wants to access resources on
AJVC (and Antonio is logged onto AJVC), then AJVC will see that Leonor
is an authenticated user on its system and therefore grant the request.

2. If you haven't previously created passwords on both machines, do so.
You can then set each machine to automatically log into the desired
user account.

You can login as "Antonio" or as "Leonor", as you wish, to either computer. If
the common account, with a common, non-blank password, is "Net", you'll just
have to enter "Net" and its password when you wish to access the other computer.
Not when you start the computer, when you connect to the share on the other
computer.

And, as long as Net has full administrative access, all shared data will be
available to either user.

Chuck/Malke:

OK. I setup an account named NET using CONTROL PANEL - ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS
- COMPUTER MANAGEMENT. Under SYSTEM TOOLS - LOCAL USERS AND GROUPS – USERS
same name, same description, same password and member of the ADMINISTRATORS
Group. Advanced File Sharing is active in both computers.

At AJVC I have, among others…
User Full Name Description
A Antonio Blank (this account has blank password)
NET Home Network Home Network (this has a password)

At LEVC I have, among others
User Full Name Description
A Leonor Blank (this account has blank password)
NET Home Network Home Network (this has a password)

ALL users above are members of the ADMINISTRATORS Group. (You can see I have
same user “A†with a blank password on both computers)

I got windows initial screen asking which user I should log “Antonio†or
“Home Network†at AJVC and “Leonor†or “Home Network†at LEVC. If I read
correctly you said it won’t happen. What did I do wrong?

Here’s what happened when I log with different users at the startup screen…

Login at AJVC with user “Antonioâ€
Login at LEVC with user “Leonorâ€
-> I can access from AJVC to LEVC but not the other way around

Login at AJVC with user “Home Networkâ€
Login at LEVC with user “Home Networkâ€
-> Problem Solved… I can see and share either way.

Login at AJVC with user “Home Networkâ€
Login at LEVC with user “Leonorâ€
-> I can access from AJVC to LEVC but not the other way around

Login at AJVC with user “Antonioâ€
Login at LEVC with user “Home Networkâ€
-> Problem Solved… I can see and share either way.

When accessing the Shares I was never asked for a User/Password no matter
with what user I logged in.

So I think the problem is with user “Leonorâ€

What now?. Should I erase user “Leonor†and leave only “Home Network†(I
don’t really like this option)?, How can I work automatically without
choosing user when logging in?

Thanks!

(You can see I have
same user “A” with a blank password on both computers)

I got windows initial screen asking which user I should log “Antonio” or
“Home Network” at AJVC and “Leonor” or “Home Network” at LEVC. If I read
correctly you said it won’t happen. What did I do wrong?

Here’s what happened when I log with different users at the startup screen…

Login at AJVC with user “Antonio”
Login at LEVC with user “Leonor”
-> I can access from AJVC to LEVC but not the other way around

Login at AJVC with user “Home Network”
Login at LEVC with user “Home Network”
-> Problem Solved… I can see and share either way.

Login at AJVC with user “Home Network”
Login at LEVC with user “Leonor”
-> I can access from AJVC to LEVC but not the other way around

Login at AJVC with user “Antonio”
Login at LEVC with user “Home Network”
-> Problem Solved… I can see and share either way.

This is fun. The terminology "User" and "Full Name" is a major confusion here.
When you login, you'll see "Full Name" displayed, but the account name used is
"User".

So, you now have two accounts, "A" and "Net", on each computer. Account "A" is
on both computers, and you're using it (as "Antonio" on Ajvc, and as "Leonor" on
Levc). But, since it has no password, it isn't useful for network access,
Unless the computer is tweaked. Since account "A" can't be used, the system
falls back to "Guest".

Try reading the Microsoft white paper here for details.

Now you need to disable account "Net" for local use, so you won't have to select
an account when starting up.

Maybe it would be better to find out what you are trying to do here. Do you
have two computers, owned by two different individuals, but usable by either?
If you don't care about securing either computer, just setup both computers to
allow blank passwords for network access. Delete the "Net" account. If account
"A" has administrative access on each computer, it should work.

If you keep having this asymmetrical problem, look at the settings identified in
my article. You'll find a difference between Ajvc and Levc.

Hey MG,

Good to see you back! I had a lot of fun figuring all of that out, so it's good
to see that it produced something useful.

I personally use Forte Agent.

All of the Microsoft newsgroups are on most news servers. If you like, you can
use the Microsoft server msnews.microsoft.com (No login required). And you can
always use the CDO (web interface), which is getting better.
