The node type of "Peer-to-Peer" on DESKTOP is wrong and will prevent
the computer from sharing files and printers. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a home
network, for NetBIOS name resolution.

Run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try file and printer sharing again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

Jackie,

I'll start with the browstat log from Notebook.
Status for domain JOHNSON HOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{43ABA524-4143-4
710-AF4D-9A03CC29E007}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.

That's indicative of either a NetBT setting, or a personal firewall problem.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html#NotActive

And here's a likely candidate.
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : DESKTOP
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html

And yet another possible problem. This will cause name resolution problems,
though not browsing problems necessarily.
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : DESKTOP
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :

Thanks Steve. Your solution worked. I had to set the nodetype to broadcast
and then it worked just fine. I did have to redesignate my shared folders but
all of the shared printers and other stuff just popped right up.
