Which Outlook email account when replying to emails?

You seem to be having a genuine problem at odds with the way Outlook is
supposed to work. dbmdude is not having the same problem. He's actually
receiving all the mail through a single account..

No it doesn't... it shows the receiving account as being my 'A' account.
And the goosd news is that that information has just led me to solving
the problem! I think I owe you an explanation after all your excellent
advice (the alternative was to hang my head in shame and just exit
quietly...)

I definitely thought that my mail on the disputed accounts was sending
and receiving on that account; it turns out that it was only *sending*
that way; received mail has always actually been coming in via the 'A'
account (and then being sorted to the correct folder by an outlook rule).

Here's the embarrassing bit - some info which I hadn't thought to
mention as it didn't seem relevant and would (I thought) just have confused.

I have my own domain name for all my email which directs it all to the
server of my ISP (virginmedia.com). So, I manage about 12 email
addresses of the format (e-mail address removed) each of which forwards
directly to its own bespoke 'real' address (e-mail address removed)
(which is completely hidden from the sender/receipient).

What's unfortunately happened with a couple of addresses is that I
obviously forgot to set up the forwarding facility with my domain name
company. I've just found out that there's a default setting on my
domain name account which forwards any unknown (e-mail address removed) to
my 'A' account; ie it doesn't just bounce them as I'd always assumed
happened; so I'd never imagined there could be a problem there. And
that's why these two addresses have always forwarded to my 'A' account,
and why therefore when I reply to them, the replies go through the 'A'
account too!

So, many thanks for your (and others) perseverence in helping me resolve
a very irritating problem, and apologies for holding back the key bit of
info.
