Which logs can I safely delete?

I searched for all *.log files, and the list was trememdous. One log was
over 24,000 KBs.

Is there a list of log listings that I can safely delete? I want to keep
those that might be needed for investigation of problems, but maybe there are
many that are unnecessary.

The one log that is so huge is "tvDebug". I don't even know what it is.

Can anyone help me figure out what I can delete? I have less than 40% left
on my C drive, and it's only 14.9 Gigs. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hello, Syoung

All log files are usually safe to delete.

Besides that if you want additional space on your hard drive, i would
recommend you to clean out the Internet Explorer cache (open IE, press
`tools`, select `internet options` and in the new window, select `delete
files`).
The process may take some time but i'm almost sure it will clean out some
gigabyte of files.

Also check C:\Documents And Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Temp folder
and clean it. It is generally safe to delete all what's in there. Be sure to
replace <Username> with you windows username to access the directory. Please
also note, that the `local settings` folder is hidden, and the best way to
access it is to type in the full folder path in the start--> run box.

Also think about disabling system restore function, since it may take a LOT
of hard drive space.

There are also other less safe ways to clean out stuff from your windows box.

Hope that helps ;)

Thank you Andrew for your response. I appreciate your time.

I use CClean, which is so quick to get rid of the internet, history, temp
files. It has helped. But I downloaded EasyClean, and have discovered so
many duplicates (which I am not brave enough to tackle, since they are
actually not duplicates). I usually eliminate restores after a period of
days or weeks, to just leave the latest one.

But maybe, I'm not sure of this, but I had over 50% of my disk free before I
downloaded EasyClean. Could this have taken over 20% of the space?

I also use AdAware, and have Prevx, McAfee Virus, Microsoft Anti-Spyware. I
can't figure out where the bloat is coming from. Do you have another idea
for me?

Thank you so very much. Waiting time is getting critical for programs to
run. I am using dial-up, which would account for internet wait time, but
just normal load time is way too long.

Thanks.

tvDebug is a Zone Alarm log. Try a search in Google

How large is your hard disk?

Thanks, Gerry for that information. I will delete tvDebug.

Wierdly enough, my C drive is 14.9 (9 gigs used), my D is 40.9 (1.33 gigs
used). It seems that the drives are switched, but that's the way the
computer came. So I have to save every little bit of space on C. (I'd like
to switch them, since everything wants to go to the C drive.)

Do you have files / folders that might be moved to the other?

Try Disk CleanUp to remove Temporary Internet Files and the System
Restore option in the More Options tab of Disk CleanUp.

To move programmes use Add / Remove Programs in Start, Control Panel,
Add / Remove Programs to uninstall programmes. Create a Programs
Directory on your other partition and reinstall there.

Some other notes you may find useful.

Create a My Documents folder in another partition and copy ( not move )
the contents of My Documents to your new folder. Then delete the files
in your My Documents folder ( if you encounter problems deleting use
Shift + Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin ). You will also need to
change Default File locations in the Microsoft Office programmes you
use. For Word go to Tools, Options, File Locations, highlight Documents,
click on Modify and change file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options,
General and change default file path.

For Temporary Internet Files select Start, Control Panel, Internet
Options, Temporary Internet Files. Settings, Move Folder.

To move the Outlook Express Store Folder select in Outlook Express
Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder, Change.

If you need more you could reduce the amount of space allocated to
system restore from 12% to 10% or even 8%. Right click My Computer,
select Properties, System Restore tab, place cursor on drive and click
on Settings.

Hi Gerry. I tried that with WordPerfect, but it didn't quite work out. Then
there were other helper apps, and extension apps in other programs that
complicate. But at least I download to my D and save most programs there.

You have given me more ideas on how to correctly move files, though, and I'm
going to try them. Thank you very much.
